Budapest’s most gloriously kitsch time machine has two cylinders, a blue-gray smoke trail, and a smell you’ll never forget. Climb into an original East German “paper jaguar” and relive how a typical family hit the road for a weekend getaway under state socialism. Thin doors, tight seats, rattling panels, and an engine that coughs more than it purrs—this is the Trabant experience in full. The meeting point is in District 22, Budafok-Tétény, at the corner of Balatoni Road and Szabadkai Street (1223 Budapest). Dates: April 27–May 3, 2026, and May 4–10, 2026, with more dates coming soon.
Showy Arrival: Trabant Transfer to Memento Park
Make an entrance that’s impossible to miss and perfectly on theme: a door-to-door Trabant transfer from anywhere within Budapest to Memento Park during regular opening hours, for individuals or groups. Price: $244/Trabant (88,800 HUF). Includes for up to 3 people: pick-up and drop-off within Budapest, entry to Memento Park, a drink at the Red Star Store buffet, and a guided tour in the park. Over three guests? Book more cars. Only the transfer fee is charged for additional vehicles; the guiding fee is covered by the first service.
Combined Tours: Retro Markets, Revolution Sites, and After-Hours
Add a guided tour at Memento Park during or beyond opening hours—twilight and night tours included. Mix in era-fitting stops such as the Ecseri Flea Market for 60s–70s treasures, or visit key memorial locations of the 1956 Revolution. Got a special request? They’ll tailor it.
1956 Revolution Route by Trabant
This route takes you to the movement’s touchstones: Kossuth Square, scene of the fatal volley in front of Parliament; Corvin köz (Corvin Passage), where the Red Army suffered its first defeat; and the New Public Cemetery (Új Köztemető), final resting place of the revolution’s martyrs. Price: $244/Trabant (88,800 HUF), duration 2.5–3 hours. Includes for up to 3 people: door-to-door Budapest transfer, open-ended conversation with a trained driver–guide, guided visits at each site, and any necessary entry fees. More than three guests require extra vehicles; the guiding fee remains included only with the first service. Add Memento Park to the package for an extra $63/Trabant (22,860 HUF), applied to each car if your group exceeds three.
Workers’ Movement Tour
Stroll Fiumei Road Cemetery to the Workers’ Movement Pantheon, pay respects at the graves of communist party chief János Kádár and his wife Mária Tamáska, and at the grave of communist interior minister László Rajk, executed by fellow communists. Continue to a classic socialist-realist housing estate—shadows and charm included. Same pricing and inclusions as the 1956 tour. With Memento Park combined, total duration: 3.5–4 hours. Extras available on combined tours: Memento Park entry, guided tour, one drink per person at the gift shop, and snacks.
Pöfögés: Put-Put Rides Among Giants
Want the raw two-stroke buzz? Book a short “pöfögés” ride weaving between Memento Park’s statues and past Stalin’s Boots. Ideal for family events, school groups, or team-building add-ons; advance reservation required. Price: $151 call-out fee per Trabant (55,000 HUF) + $12/person (4,500 HUF). Includes Memento Park entry, a guided park tour, and one drink per person at the Red Star Store buffet.
Trabant Challenges and Mini-Games
Try the Trabant push slalom, a motor-bay memory game, put-put loops around the statues and nearby streets, and a supervised test drive if you hold a valid driver’s license. For birthdays, graduations, or anniversaries, add a celebration pack for $41 (25,000 HUF): up to a 16-slice cake, candles, homemade lemonade, tray, cutlery, and cups. Prices apply to groups up to 15; for more than 15, a second Trabant is recommended. Program length varies by group size and options: 60–90 minutes.
Team Building: Laughs, Legends, and Lenin’s Hat
One to one-and-a-half hours of playful challenges, riddles, and park sleuthing. Find the Soviet double agent Vladimir, count the bespectacled propagandists, check whether Lenin wears a hat while clutching another, spot the tallest monument, test how many humans fit into a Trabant, dare to steer with eyes closed, and decode Stalin’s message to the future. Memento Park is a prime open-air stage for these games, with space, inspiration, and on-site support on request.
Budapest dates: April 27–May 3, 2026, and May 4–10, 2026. Pick your time slot, claim your smoky chariot, and let the two-stroke soundtrack do the rest.
