Guided Castle Walks – Stories from the City’s Heart
Weekends kick off the most popular tours at 11:30, 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. These walks unlock spots you can’t visit alone: the Archbishop’s Palace with its Baroque interiors, renovated rooms, and special artifacts; Gizella Chapel, the quarter’s oldest and quietest sacred space with surviving medieval fresco fragments; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, which paint a vivid picture of Veszprém’s story through the basilica’s past and medieval crypt details; and St. George’s Chapel, an ancient site in the castle’s core, accessible only on these tours. Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House
All exhibits are free during opening hours. “Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai” (Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers), the 2025 Exhibition of the Year winner, showcases artifacts, engravings, and modern interpretations of Mary Magdalene, paired with Blessed Bódi Mary Magdalene’s thoughts. The “Kamrakiállítás” (Chamber Exhibition) displays Baroque items, liturgical pieces, and photos over 100 years old from the cathedral’s history. “Nem káptalan a fejem” (Not a Chapter on My Head) is an interactive display explaining who canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter worked in a fun, simple way. The castle quarter’s story gets fresh chapters with two new sites: descend into St. Michael’s Cathedral crypt and explore St. George’s Chapel ruins, making a millennium of history visible. The cathedral tour plunges into layers from a thousand years—14th-century Gothic sanctuary, Bishop Padányi Bíró Márton’s Baroque tomb, restored interiors. The crypt’s vaulted silence captures time in stone, a tour highlight. St. George’s Chapel, on the cathedral’s north side, is among Hungary’s oldest Christian sites. Excavations uncovered its 10th-century rotunda walls. Legend says Prince St. Emeric vowed here before the Virgin’s altar; it was a key medieval pilgrimage spot holding St. George’s skull relic, a Byzantine gift to King St. Stephen.
Tours run year-round, 60 minutes, limited groups.
