Get ready to dive deep into the world beneath your feet at the Ajka Mining Museum’s 2025 fall event series. Held in Ajka’s Park Forest (Parkerdő), the museum is bringing fascinating programs and rare exhibitions about mining history, minerals, rocks, and fossils.
The Battle Against Darkness: Lighting the Mines
From September 10 to 14, 17 to 21, and again 24 to 28, visitors can explore the limited-time exhibition, “Conquering Darkness: The History of Mine Lighting.” Travel through time and see how miners illuminated the underground—from simple candles, to carbide lamps, to battery-powered headlamps. Ever wondered who or what “mine gnomes” are, or what eerie sounds echoed through these tunnels every day? Now’s your chance to find out and fully immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and sensations of the mine.
Mining Machines Revealed in a New Light
On September 19, experience mining machines and the brave world of mine workers bathed in a mysterious evening glow at the museum’s highlight event. Renowned mining engineer Charles Horváth (Károly Horváth) leads an exciting guided tour, bringing the world of coal, machinery, and underground danger to life with stories from his own time working below ground. His fresh perspective makes mining relatable—even if you’ve never held a pickaxe. Entry for this special night is $11, which includes a glass of wine from Clemenets Winery and authentic miner’s snacks. Tickets are only available in advance at the museum or via bank transfer. It’s a tour regular guests say you can’t miss.
Researchers’ Night: Hands-on Science
On September 26, join Researchers’ Night from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and get hands-on with mining tech like the classic carbide lamp and even a spark machine. The curators are ready for all your burning questions—bring your inner scientist!
Events and dates may change—check before heading underground!
