Keszthely’s iconic Festetics Palace (Festetics Kastély) and its scenic grounds come alive in 2025 with a packed calendar of exhibitions, games, music, theater, and unique outdoor experiences for all ages. Nestled in beautiful surroundings, the palace’s offerings range from family-friendly playhouses and Lego worlds to elegant vintage car showcases and open-air adventures on the shores and waters of Lake Balaton.
Lego Dreams, Detective Games & Green Creativity
From August 25 to 31, the Amazon House Visitor Center (Amazon Ház Látogatóközpont) hosts the “World of Bricks” (“Kockák Világa”) Exhibition. Here, fairy tales and daydreams are built with tiny bricks, creating fun dioramas for kids and adults alike. Explore Pirate Island, the dual worlds of Friends (both winter and summer versions), custom-built sailing ships, Wild West heroes, and the legendary Star Wars battle on the icy planet Hoth.
During the same week, history-themed playhouse days make learning fun. On August 28, test your animal knowledge and discover the name for a male cat in a playful quiz. The next day, August 29, it’s all about the Treasure Hunt Game, taking adventurers indoors and out into the palace gardens. August 30 features three themed activities: an interactive palace crime-solving mystery, a competitive Uno Party for card game fans, and a Green Day, inviting participants to get creative with upcycling using napkin art and rock painting.
Classic Cars & Autumn Nights
September brings vintage flair with the Festetics Concours d’Elegance on the 6th and 7th. This antique car beauty contest showcases vehicles built before 1960, blending automotive nostalgia with the palace’s elegance.
September 20 marks “Museums’ Night of Autumn,” an invitation to experience Keszthely’s museums after dark in an atmospheric, cultural evening.
Outdoor Discovery & Lake Balaton Adventures
Throughout late summer and fall, Lake Balaton provides a stunning backdrop for open-air activities. Weekly programs (check dates for recurring availability) let you unwind in the heart of the lake on relaxing sightseeing boats departing from the port, or participate in outdoor play sessions (“Outdoor Play” – “Játék a szabadban”).
For nature lovers, guided canoe tours depart from the Little Balaton Visitor Center (Kis-Balaton Látogatóközpont), and expert-led excursions take visitors to the István Fekete memorial site (Fekete István emlékhely) and Uncle Matula’s hut (Matula bácsi kunyhója) on Diás Island (Diás-sziget). Don’t miss the total lunar eclipse telescopic viewing on the lakeshore, scheduled for September 7.
Culture, Dance & Laughter
The stage comes alive in Keszthely, with a dynamic series of performances starting in September. Highlights include:
– “Hansel and Gretel” (“Jancsi és Juliska”) performed by the Bozsik Yvette Ensemble
– “Transylvania Express” (“Transylvania Expressz”) by the Dezső Fitos Company (Fitos Dezső Társulat), along with its accompanying photo exhibition
– Café Brasil with GG Dance Eger (GG Tánc Eger), an energetic dance show
– “Scenes from a Marriage” (“Jelenetek a házasságról”) staged by the Szeged Contemporary Ballet (Szegedi Kortárs Balett)
Tickets for theatrical and dance events range from about $9.50 to $17.
On September 16, Hungarian pop legend Zorán stops on his 2025 tour, with tickets at about $41.
Comedy and literature lovers have plenty to choose from as well: Dr. Kitti Almássy’s talk “Loose Ends” (“Elvarratlan szálak”), stand-up comedy by Péter Janklovics (Janklovics Péter) and Dániel Mogács (Mogács Dániel), a humorous science lecture by László Mérő on artificial intelligence, and the solo show “Rent Is Due” (“A bér kötelez”). Tickets for these artists range from $15.20 to $17.70 and up.
Workshops, Showcases & Special Experiences
Don’t just observe—get hands-on! Join the one-day upholstery workshop on September 27 to learn, create, and take something unique home. Or check out the multi-arts exhibition “Between Heaven and Earth” (“Ég és föld között”) by the Flow Balaton (Flow Balaton) creative community on September 5.
Enjoy the nostalgia of the BAHART Helka, a classic steamship, with regular “Culture Ship” (“Kulthajó”) programs offering artistic and cultural performances as you cruise the lake.
Something for Everyone, All Season Long
Family musicals, scientific stand-up, lively dance, and guided adventures: the Festetics Palace events calendar keeps both locals and tourists entertained through summer and well into autumn. Whether you’re eager to play, watch, listen, or explore, 2025 in Keszthely promises a spirited mix of tradition, creativity, and fun you won’t want to miss.
