A winter stroll through Veszprém’s Castle District hits differently. Soft light washes the Baroque facades, Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér) falls quiet, and bells roll through the narrow streets. Even in the cold months, the Veszprém Archdiocesan Tourist Center opens doors beyond the postcard walk on Castle Street (Vár utca), guiding visitors into the palace, chapels, and exhibitions with real stories and carefully restored spaces. The Biró–Giczey House has become the Baroque gateway to the district: guided castle walks start here, there’s a gift shop, and several exhibitions are free to visit—including the 2025 Exhibition of the Year winner, Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – The Flowers of the Magdalens).
Guided Castle Walks
The weekend favorite runs at three times—11:30, 14:00, and 16:00—unlocking places you can’t see on your own. Highlights include:
– Archiepiscopal Palace: Baroque interiors, renewed halls, and standout artifacts that reveal the layers of ecclesiastical life.
– Gizella Chapel: One of the oldest, calmest sacred spaces in the district, where surviving fresco fragments cast a rare medieval mood.
– St. Michael’s Cathedral and Crypt: A defining landmark of the city, pairing the basilica’s evolving past with the crypt’s medieval details for a clear, grounded picture of Veszprém’s history.
– St. George’s Chapel: A timeworn memorial in the heart of the castle, accessible only with a guide.
All walks depart from the Biró–Giczey House; check the event calendar for current times and any changes.
Exhibitions at the Biró–Giczey House
All shows are free during opening hours.

– Pantry Exhibition: Glimpses from the Cathedral’s past with Baroque objects, liturgical elements, and photos over 100 years old.
– Not a Chapter Head: An interactive, accessible dive into who the canons were and how the Veszprém chapter operated.
– Archaeology Exhibition: A visual tour of the castle hill’s shifting settlement history and finds, delivered through striking installations.
