Veszprém’s Castle District is a winter mood in itself. Soft light settles on Baroque facades, silence holds Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér), and bells float through the narrow streets. Even in the cold months, the Veszprém Archdiocesan Tourism Center invites visitors not just to stroll Vár Street, but to step inside palaces, chapels, and exhibitions and see their world up close. The Biró–Giczey House serves as the Castle District’s Baroque gate: guided castle walks start here, the gift shop is here, and several free exhibitions await inside — including Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – The Flowers of the Magdalens), winner of the Exhibition of the Year 2025 award.
Guided Castle Walks: Stories From the City’s Heart
The weekend favorite runs at three start times: 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These tours open doors you can’t enter on your own:
• Archbishop’s Palace (Érseki Palota) – Baroque interiors, renewed spaces, and unusual artifacts.
• Gizella Chapel (Gizella Kápolna) – One of the oldest, quietest sacred spaces in the district, where surviving fresco fragments conjure a distinctive medieval mood.
• St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt (Szent Mihály Főszékesegyház) – A defining building of Veszprém, where the basilica’s past and the medieval details of the crypt together sketch an authentic picture of the city’s history.
• St. George’s Chapel (Szent György-kápolna) – An ancient memorial place in the heart of the castle, accessible only with a guided walk.
Tours depart from the Biró–Giczey House. Check the event calendar for current start times and any changes.
Free Exhibitions at the Biró–Giczey House
All exhibitions can be visited for free during opening hours.
• Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – The Flowers of the Magdalens). The award-winning 2025 show presents Mary Magdalene with artifacts, prints, and contemporary reflections, accompanied by the thoughts of Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi.
• Pantry Exhibition – Details from the Cathedral’s Past. Baroque-era objects, liturgical pieces, and photos over 100 years old are on view.
• My Head Is Not a Chapter – An interactive exhibit that playfully explains who the canons were and how the Veszprém chapter functioned.
• Archaeological Exhibit – Spectacular installations trace centuries of settlement history and excavations on Castle Hill.
