Veszprém’s revitalized castle district at 8200 Veszprém is gearing up for an epic 2026 with guided tours, free exhibitions, and a packed calendar of festivals, concerts, and family fun. Kicking off on March 15, this program guide highlights weekends buzzing with history walks and special happenings through summer highlights like VeszprémFest.
Guided Castle Tours – Stories from the City’s Heart
Dive into the castle district’s unique vibe and thousand-year history on thematic guided walks—a weekend favorite—starting at 11:30am, 2pm, and 4pm. Unlock spots off-limits on your own: the Archbishop’s Palace with its baroque interiors, recently renovated spaces, and rare artifacts; Gizella Chapel, the district’s oldest and quietest sacred space with surviving medieval fresco fragments; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, which depict Veszprém’s past through basilica history and medieval details; and St. George’s Chapel, an ancient site in the castle’s core, accessible only on these tours. Tours depart from Biró–Giczey House; check the event calendar for times and updates.
Free Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House
All exhibits are free during opening hours. “Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai” (Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers), 2025’s Exhibit of the Year, showcases Mary Magdalene through artifacts, engravings, contemporary reflections, and Blessed Bódi Mária Magdalene’s thoughts. The “Kamrakiállítás” (Chamber Exhibit) reveals cathedral history with baroque items, liturgical pieces, and photos over 100 years old. “Nem káptalan a fejem” (Not a Chapter on My Head) is an interactive display explaining canons and how Veszprém’s chapter worked in a fun, simple way. The archaeological exhibit uses stunning installations to trace the castle hill’s evolving settlement history and excavations.
