The Veszprém Castle District takes on a special mood in winter. A soft glow washes over the Baroque facades, quiet settles around Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér), and bell peals drift through the streets. The Veszprém Archiepiscopal Tourism Center welcomes visitors who don’t just want to stroll down Castle Street but also want to step into the real world of the palace, chapels, and exhibitions. The Biró–Giczey House now serves as the Baroque gateway to the district: guided castle walks start here, the gift shop is here, and several exhibitions are free to visit, including Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – Flowers of the Magdalens), winner of the 2025 Exhibition of the Year award.
Guided castle walks: stories from the city’s heart
The weekend’s favorite program runs three times daily: 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These walks unlock places you can’t enter on your own. The Archiepiscopal Palace opens with its Baroque interiors, renewed spaces, and distinctive artifacts. The Gizella Chapel offers one of the oldest, quietest sacred spaces in the district, where surviving medieval fresco fragments create a unique, centuries-old atmosphere. St. Michael’s Metropolitan Cathedral and its crypt stand as defining symbols of the city; the basilica’s past and the crypt’s medieval details together sketch an authentic portrait of Veszprém’s story. St. George’s Chapel, an ancient memorial site at the very heart of the castle, is accessible only on these guided tours. Walks depart from the Biró–Giczey House, and up-to-date times and any changes appear in the events calendar.
Free exhibitions at the Biró–Giczey House
All exhibitions are free during opening hours. Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – Flowers of the Magdalens), winner of the 2025 Exhibition of the Year, frames Mary Magdalene through artifacts, engravings, and contemporary artistic reflections, interwoven with the thoughts of Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi. The pantry-sized display Kamrakiállítás (Pantry Exhibition) shows details from the cathedral’s past, with Baroque objects, liturgical items, and photographs over a century old. Nem káptalan a fejem (My Head’s Not a Chapter) turns the chapterhouse’s world into an interactive, playful, and clear introduction to who the canons were and how the Veszprém chapter worked. An archaeological exhibition presents the castle hill’s shifting settlement history across centuries, with striking installations and finds.
Dates to circle in March
Guided Castle Walks run on March 7 and March 8 at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00 in Veszprém. On March 14, two walks set off at 14:00 and 16:00, but stay for the evening: the Lenten musical devotion at St. Michael’s Metropolitan Cathedral begins at 19:00. The Cantabile Vocal Ensemble (Cantabile Énekegyüttes) of Veszprém, conducted by Mária Petrőcz Veres, joins forces with Kaposvár’s CapPuccini Choir, led by Zoltán Szili. Their shared service invites quiet reflection and a musical path toward the mystery of Christ’s suffering and redeeming love. Admission is free, and everyone’s welcome.
More around town this spring
Veszprém’s calendar is stacked beyond the castle district. Highlights in March include Csongor Benyes’s exhibition opening, the Women’s Day Craft Fair (Nőnapi Kézműves IZÉ) on Kossuth Street, and multiple programs at the Eötvös Károly Library and its branches: Kids’ Corner at the American Corner, Fairy Tale Tuesday (Mesekedd) at the Dózsaváros Branch, a Balaton quiz night, and live storytelling for adults with Cecília Stenszky. There’s a cross-generational card club called Lay Our Cards on the Table! (Terítsük ki lapjainkat!), a commemoration at Eötvös Károly’s grave, and regular Conversation Club sessions at the American Corner. The youth library ZUG opens its doors, there’s a talk on Gyula Krúdy’s Mohács Trilogy, and a therapy dog session in the children’s library. Music lovers can catch Márta Ábrahám’s music history lectures, and language fans will find the French Club and a quiz night at the American Corner. Add a conversation with writer Dávid Ádám, the ever-growing Silent Book Club, more Kids’ Corner, an Easter crafts afternoon at the Eötvös Károly Library, another Conversation Club, a free-slot-format book launch called The Fourth Day (A negyedik nap), an Easter crafts morning with Éva Nemes, Adam Play (Ádám-játék), and a live Palm Sunday Passion. The global hit LORD OF THE DANCE celebrates its 30th anniversary tour on March 27.
