Veszprém’s castle district will unveil its full treasures through guided tours in 2026. As you wander these spaces, you’ll not only learn about the buildings’ past but also feel the spiritual continuity that has shaped the face of Veszprém for a thousand years—the queens’ city. Thematic guided castle tours let visitors immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere and millennium-long history of Veszprém’s castle quarter. Starting from Biró–Giczey House at Vár utca 31, 8200 Veszprém, these popular weekend programs begin at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. They provide access to spots you can’t visit on your own: the Archbishop’s Palace with its Baroque interiors, renovated spaces, and special artifacts; Gizella Chapel, the castle district’s oldest and quietest sacred space, with surviving fresco fragments that create a medieval atmosphere; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, one of the city’s defining buildings, where the basilica’s history and the crypt’s medieval details tell Veszprém’s authentic story; and St. George’s Chapel, an ancient memorial in the castle’s heart, accessible only on guided tours. Check the event calendar for exact times and changes.
Free Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House
All exhibits are free during opening hours. “Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai” (Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers), the 2025 Exhibit of the Year winner, showcases artifacts, engravings, and contemporary reflections on Mary Magdalene, featuring the thoughts of Blessed Bódi Mary Magdalene. The “Kamrakiállítás” (Chamber Exhibition)—details from the cathedral’s past—displays Baroque-era items, liturgical elements, and over 100-year-old photos. “Nem káptalan a fejem” (Not a Chapter on My Head), an interactive exhibit, playfully explains who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter functioned. The archaeological exhibit uses striking installations to reveal the castle hill’s centuries of settlement history and finds. General hours (except holidays): exhibits Tuesday–Friday 5–7 p.m., weekends 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Monday closed. Gift shop weekends 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

New Underground Sites Boost Veszprém Tours
Veszprém’s castle tours expand with two new gems: descend into St. Michael’s Cathedral crypt and explore St. George’s Chapel’s unearthed remains, bringing 1,000 years to life. The cathedral tour delves into its millennium: 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, Bishop Padányi Bíró Márton’s Baroque tomb, restored interiors. The crypt’s vaulted silence and time trapped in stone make it unforgettable. St. George’s Chapel, on the cathedral’s north side, is among Hungary’s oldest Christian sites. Excavations revealed its 10th-century rotunda foundations. Legend says Prince St. Emeric vowed here before the Virgin’s altar, giving it sacred weight. Medieval pilgrims flocked here; it housed St. George’s head relic, gifted by the Byzantine emperor to King St. Stephen. Tours run year-round, 60 minutes, limited groups.
