Veszprém’s Castle Quarter is rolling out a refreshed cultural calendar in 2026, with guided walks, free exhibitions, concerts, and heavyweight summer festivals across the historic hilltop. The action centers on 8200 Veszprém, Castle Quarter (Várnegyed), with weekend highlights and special dates stacked from April through September.
Guided Castle Walks
Step into a thousand years of stories on themed guided tours, the weekend favorite launching at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These walks unlock spaces you can’t visit on your own:
– Archbishop’s Palace: Baroque interiors, renewed rooms, standout artworks.
– Gizella Chapel: one of the oldest, quietest sacred sites, where preserved fresco fragments cast a distinctly medieval mood.
– St. Michael’s Cathedral and Crypt: the city’s defining basilica, with a storied past and a medieval crypt that together sketch a vivid portrait of Veszprém’s history.
– St. George Chapel: an ancient sanctuary in the heart of the castle, open only with a guide.
Tours start in front of the Biró–Giczey House; check the events calendar for current times and changes.
Free Exhibitions at the Biró–Giczey House
All exhibitions are free during opening hours.
– Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistles and Lilies – The Flowers of Magdalen): the 2025 Exhibition of the Year, blending artifacts, engravings, and contemporary responses to Mary Magdalene, with reflections by Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi.
– Pantry Exhibition – details from the Cathedral’s past: Baroque objects, liturgical pieces, and photos over 100 years old.
– Not Thick-Headed: an interactive show demystifying who the canons were and how the Veszprém Chapter worked.
– Archaeology display: the hill’s evolving settlement history and finds, presented with striking installations.
