Veszprém’s castle quarter doesn’t hibernate. In winter, soft light glows on Baroque façades, Szentháromság Square (Holy Trinity Square) falls quiet, and bells drift through the lanes. Guided castle walks open spaces you can’t see on your own, while free exhibitions and a snug gift shop at the Biró–Giczey House turn a frosty weekend into a deep dive into a thousand years of the “City of Queens.” Tours run all year, with extra dates over the holidays and two newly added, history-rich sites underground and at the heart of the hilltop.
Winter walks and where to start
Everything begins at the Biró–Giczey House, the Baroque gateway to the castle quarter at Vár utca 31. This is where guided tours set off, tickets are sold, and all exhibitions are free. The house’s headliner, Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – The Magdalens’ Flowers), was named Exhibition of the Year 2025, pairing historic objects and engravings with contemporary reflections on Mary Magdalene, illuminated by the words of Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi.
What the tours unlock
Weekends are built around three time slots: 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. Each walk lasts about 60 minutes and is capped at 25 people per group. Along the way, doors open to places otherwise off-limits:
– Érseki Palota (Archbishop’s Palace): Baroque interiors, renewed spaces, and rare objects tell the story of ecclesiastical power in striking detail.
– Gizella Kápolna (Gizella Chapel): One of the quarter’s oldest, quietest sacred spaces, where surviving medieval fresco fragments lend a distinct atmosphere.
– Szent Mihály Főszékesegyház (St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica) and its crypt: The city’s defining basilica and the medieval details of the undercroft form a living timeline of Veszprém’s past.
– Szent György-kápolna (St. George Chapel): A venerable site at the castle’s core, accessible only with a guide.
Two new stops, one thousand years down
The guided routes now include two standout additions. First, the crypt beneath Szent Mihály Főszékesegyház (St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica), where silence under stone vaults makes time feel sealed into the masonry. Highlights include the 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, the Baroque tomb of Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró, and a carefully restored interior. Second, the Szent György Chapel (St. George Chapel) on the basilica’s north side, one of Hungarian Christianity’s oldest memorial sites. Archaeology has uncovered the foundations of its original 10th-century rotunda. Tradition holds that Prince Saint Emeric (Szent Imre) made his vow here before the Virgin’s altar, elevating the chapel’s sacred weight. In the Middle Ages it was a major pilgrimage stop, home to the head relic of Saint George, gifted by the Byzantine emperor to King Saint Stephen (Szent István).
