Two new stops join the castle walks
The Castle District is turning a page: the already popular guided tours now include two special sites. Visitors can descend underground into the crypt of St. Michael’s Cathedral and explore the exposed remains of St. George’s Chapel — where a millennium of history becomes visible.
St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt
The new route delves into the deep layers of the cathedral’s thousand-year story. Expect a 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, the Baroque tomb of Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró, and a painstakingly restored interior. The crypt’s atmosphere — silence beneath vaults, time sealed in stone — is set to be one of this year’s standout tour moments.
St. George’s Chapel
North of the cathedral, St. George’s Chapel is one of Hungarian Christianity’s oldest sites. Archaeology uncovered the foundations of the original 10th-century rotunda. Tradition holds that Prince St. Emeric (Szent Imre) made his vow here before the Virgin’s altar, giving the place a special sacred weight. In the Middle Ages it drew pilgrims: the chapel kept the head relic of St. George, a gift from the Byzantine emperor to King St. Stephen (Szent István).
