Veszprém’s castle district throws open its doors in 2026 with special guided walks that trace a thousand years of history. Anyone who follows these routes doesn’t just learn about buildings; they step into the living continuity that has shaped the City of Queens (Királynék városa) for a millennium. The starting point is the Biró–Giczey House, 8200 Veszprém, Vár utca 31, and the program opens spaces normally closed to individual visitors, from Baroque salons to medieval chapels cloaked in quiet.
Weekend tours that sell out first
The most popular weekend walks set off at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. Each runs about 60 minutes and is capped at 25 people, so arrive 10–15 minutes early. Tickets are sold at the Biró–Giczey House gift shop (cash or card). Adult: $9.60; student/senior: $8.80; family (2 adults + 1–3 children): $19.20; pilgrim ticket with parish recommendation: $6.85. The schedule may shift due to liturgical or other events, so always check the calendar.
Inside-only access: four landmark stops
Erzsébet-era calm and stone-deep time meet behind usually locked doors:
• Archbishop’s Palace – Restored Baroque interiors and standout artworks, a sweep of renewed rooms that show power and taste.
• Gizella Chapel – One of the district’s oldest, most hushed sacred spaces, where fragmentary frescoes conjure a rare medieval mood.
• St. Michael’s Cathedral and crypt – The defining silhouette of the city. The basilica’s layered past and the crypt’s medieval details trace a faithful timeline of Veszprém itself.
• St. George’s Chapel – An ancient sanctuary in the heart of the castle, visitable only on a guided tour.
Two themed routes, one meeting point
Choose the light-and-devotion route or travel through a millennium in stone. Meeting/Departure: in front of the Biró–Giczey House (Vár utca 31).
• The Walk of Light and Devotion – Archbishop’s Palace + Gizella Chapel. Runs Saturday–Sunday at 11:30 and 16:00.
• A Thousand Years’ Path – St. Michael’s Cathedral + crypt + St. George’s Chapel. Runs on weekends at 14:00. Expect about 60 minutes for either route.
Brand-new highlights below ground
The expanded itinerary now leads under the cathedral into St. Michael’s crypt and reveals the newly uncovered remains of St. George’s Chapel. Here, a thousand years come into focus in stone and silence. In the cathedral, you’ll trace the 14th‑century Gothic sanctuary, pause at Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró’s Baroque tomb, and take in the meticulously restored interior. In the crypt, hushed arches and chill stone distill time into one of the season’s most haunting moments.
St. George’s Chapel: where vows once echoed
North of the cathedral stands St. George’s Chapel, one of Hungarian Christianity’s oldest memory sites. Archaeology has uncovered the foundations of the original 10th‑century rotunda. Tradition says Prince Emeric (Imre) made his vow here before the Virgin’s altar, lending the chapel an enduring sacred charge. In the Middle Ages it drew pilgrims for the head relic of St. George, a gift from the Byzantine emperor to King Stephen (István).
