Veszprém’s Castle District throws open its doors with guided walks that lead deep into the city’s heartbeat. Walk these courtyards and chapels and it’s not just architecture you meet—you feel the thread of a thousand years shaping the City of Queens. Tours set off from the Biró–Giczey House at Vár utca 31, with limited spots and stories that pull you below ground and back through time.
Weekend Tours With Exclusive Access
The most popular weekend program runs three times daily: 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These walks unlock sites you can’t visit on your own:
– Archbishop’s Palace: Baroque interiors, renewed spaces, and special artworks.
– Gizella Chapel: One of the district’s oldest, quietest sacred spaces, where surviving medieval fresco fragments keep the Middle Ages close.
– St. Michael’s Cathedral and Crypt: A defining landmark of the city, where the basilica’s layered past and the crypt’s medieval details tell Veszprém’s story with striking clarity.
– St. George’s Chapel: An ancient memorial site in the heart of the castle, accessible only on guided tours.
Groups depart from the Biró–Giczey House. Check the events calendar for current times and any changes.
Free Exhibitions at the Biró–Giczey House
All exhibitions are free during opening hours.
– Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai: The 2025 Exhibition of the Year winner explores Mary Magdalene through artifacts, prints, and contemporary responses, paired with reflections by Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi.
– “Pantry Exhibition” – Scenes from the Cathedral’s Past: Baroque objects, liturgical items, and century-old photographs.
– “My Head Is Not a Chapter” – Interactive Display: Playful, clear insights into who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter functioned.
– Archaeology Exhibition: A centuries-spanning story of the castle hill’s settlement history, told with eye-catching installations.

New Underground Highlights
The guided castle walks now include two special additions. Visitors can descend into the crypt of St. Michael’s Cathedral and discover the uncovered remains of St. George’s Chapel—places where a millennium of history is suddenly visible.
St. Michael’s Cathedral and Crypt: The new route delves into the cathedral’s depths—think 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, the Baroque tomb of Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró, and a carefully restored interior. The crypt is all hush and stone and time: one of this year’s most haunting moments beneath the vaulted arches.
St. George’s Chapel: Standing on the cathedral’s north side, this is among Hungarian Christianity’s oldest memorials. Archaeology brought to light the 10th-century rotunda’s original foundation walls. Tradition says Prince Emeric (Szent Imre) took a vow here before the Virgin’s altar, a story that gives the site special spiritual weight. In the Middle Ages it drew pilgrims as the keeper of St. George’s head relic, a gift from the Byzantine emperor to King Stephen (Szent István).
Special Day: Hungarian Culture Day in the Castle District
On January 24, 2026, from 10:00 to 18:00, the district marks Hungarian Culture Day with rarely opened spaces, newly accessible libraries, and living heritage.
Programs:
– 11:30 – Guided walk: Archbishop’s Palace and Koller Library. Led by Dr. Balázs Karlinszky, director of the Veszprém Archdiocesan Archives, inside a collection where centuries-old volumes preserve the story of Hungarian learning.
– 14:00 – Guided walk: St. Michael’s Cathedral and St. George’s Chapel. Trace sacred spaces shaped from the Middle Ages to today.
– 16:00 – Guided walk: Archbishop’s Palace and Gizella Chapel. Baroque and medieval forms meet in one dense historical space.
Guided walks run with a maximum of 20 participants. No registration. The Biró–Giczey House and its exhibitions are open and free from 10:00 to 18:00, showcasing the district’s history, architecture, and cultural heritage.
