Veszprém’s castle district is rolling out a late-autumn and Advent lineup of guided walks, thematic tours, and a poignant remembrance event that threads through palaces, chapels, cathedrals, and even the former prison. From November 22 through the holiday stretch, weekends are packed with slots at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00, with routes designed for history buffs, architecture lovers, and anyone chasing that winter-lit atmosphere across the hilltop quarter.
Weekend Castle Walks
On 2025.11.22, 2025.11.23, 2025.11.29, 2025.11.30, 2025.12.06–07, 2025.12.13–14, 2025.12.20–21, and 2025.12.27–28, Guided Castle Walks set off at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These core tours roam the historic Castle District (Várnegyed), unfolding its layered past and Baroque façades as the city readies for the season. Note: on 2025.11.30, tours run at 14:00 and 16:00 only.
Two Thematic Routes
The Walk of Light and Awe pairs the Archbishop’s Palace with the jewel-like Gizella Chapel, spotlighting sacred art, medieval frescoes, and that hush you only find in quiet, echoing chapels. It runs Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30 and 16:00.
A Thousand Years’ Journey dives into the Cathedral, the crypt, and St. George’s Chapel, stitching together a millennium of ecclesiastical power, royal ties, and architectural shifts. It runs Saturdays and Sundays at 14:00.
Biró–Giczey House: Baroque Gem and Launch Point
From 2025.12.06 onward, tours highlight the Biró–Giczey House as the Baroque jewel box of the Veszprém Castle District. Expect a garden, a gift shop, and exhibitions alongside departures for the thematic walks. When listed, tours start in front of the Biró–Giczey House, making it the perfect warm-up stop before you step into chapels and crypts.
November 27: Mindszenty, From Palace to Prison
Mark 2025.11.27 for a special, free, registration-only route: Mindszenty — From Palace to Prison. On the anniversary of the arrest of József Mindszenty, Bishop of Veszprém, the Archdiocese leads a commemorative walk into the Castle Prison (Várbörtön) through the courthouse building. Participants get an in-depth look at the chamber exhibition Devictus Vincit, which evokes Mindszenty’s captivity. Archivist Tibor László Varga from the Veszprém Archdiocesan Archives guides the tour.
Meeting point: in front of the Veszprém Court of Justice at 15:30 (Veszprém, Vár Street [Vár utca] 19). The walk starts at the courthouse and ends at the Castle Prison Visitor Center (Ruttner House).
