Veszprém is rolling out a series of guided castle walks and themed tours through late November and December, with weekend slots and a powerful one-off remembrance route marking a dark chapter in local history. If you’re chasing Baroque gems, sacred spaces, or a story that bites back, the calendar’s stacked.
Weekend Castle Walks
On November 22 and 23, guided Castle Walks set out at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. Two themed routes anchor the weekends: The Walk of Light and Devotion runs through the Archbishop’s Palace and the Gizella Chapel at 11:30 and 16:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. A Thousand Years’ Journey explores the Cathedral, the crypt, and Saint George’s Chapel at 14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
Mindszenty: From Palace to Prison
November 27 marks the anniversary of the arrest of József Mindszenty, the Veszprém bishop who became a symbol of resistance. The Archdiocese offers a free but registration-only tour tracing his path from the courthouse to detention. It starts at 15:30 in front of the Veszprém Court (Veszprém, Vár utca 19), leads through the courthouse building, and ends at the Castle Prison Visitor Center, the Ruttner House. Archivist Tibor László Varga from the Veszprém Archdiocesan Archives guides the route, with deeper insight into the Devictus Vincit chamber exhibition recalling Mindszenty’s captivity.
More November Dates
On November 29, Castle Walks run again at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00, with the same two themed routes at their usual weekend times. November 30 keeps the walks at 14:00 and 16:00, while the themed tours still run at 11:30 and 16:00 for The Walk of Light and Devotion, and at 14:00 for A Thousand Years’ Journey.
December in the Baroque Jewel Box
From December 6 to 7, then December 13–14, December 20–21, and December 27–28, Castle Walks run at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. These weekends start from the Biró–Giczey House, the Baroque jewel box of the Veszprém Castle Quarter, home to a garden, gift shop, and exhibitions. The themed tours keep the same rhythm: The Walk of Light and Devotion (Archbishop’s Palace + Gizella Chapel) at 11:30 and 16:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, and A Thousand Years’ Journey (Cathedral + crypt + Saint George’s Chapel) at 14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
