Veszprém’s Castle District (Veszprémi Várnegyed) in Hungary is gearing up for an unforgettable 2026, kicking off April 3 (Friday) through April 12 (Sunday) at 8200 Veszprém, Veszprémi Várnegyed. This annual program guide packs guided tours, exhibitions, concerts, festivals, and more into the heart of the city’s historic core. Whether you’re into medieval history, live music, or family fun, the revitalized castle quarter has something for everyone from spring through fall.
Guided Castle Tours – Stories from the City’s Heart
Dive into the castle district’s special vibe and 1,000-year history on thematic guided walks, weekend favorites starting at 11:30am, 2pm, and 4pm. These tours unlock spots you can’t visit alone: the Archbishop’s Palace with its baroque interiors, revamped spaces, and unique artifacts; Gizella Chapel, the quarter’s oldest and quietest sacred space with surviving medieval fresco fragments; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, which paint a vivid picture of Veszprém’s past; and St. George’s Chapel, an ancient site in the castle’s core only accessible on tours. Tours start from Biró–Giczey House; check the event calendar for times and updates. Special slots run April 3-12 at 10:30am, 2pm, 4pm; April 18-19 same times; April 25 at 4pm; April 26 at 10am and 4pm.
Free Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House
All exhibits are free during opening hours. “Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai” (Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers), 2025’s Exhibit of the Year, showcases artifacts, engravings, and contemporary reflections on Mary Magdalene, inspired by Blessed Bódi Mary Magdalene’s thoughts. The “Kamrakiállítás” (Chamber Exhibit) displays baroque items, liturgical pieces, and over 100-year-old photos from the cathedral’s past. “Nem káptalan a fejem” (Not a Chapter on My Head) is an interactive display explaining canons and how Veszprém’s chapter house worked in a fun, easy way. The archaeological exhibit uses eye-catching installations to reveal the castle hill’s changing settlement history and finds over centuries.
