From marriage prep and wine evenings to children’s role-play and open-air passion plays, it’s all about connection, learning, and shared experience across the city’s iconic locations.

Marriage Prep Course in Veszprém

On February 27, March 6, and March 13, engaged couples are invited to a practical, heart-centered marriage preparation course at Padányi School, 6 Szeghlety J. Street (Szeghlety J. utca 6). The course helps couples gear up for marriage and family life through key themes: the spirituality of marriage; the family we come from; communication and conflict management; intimacy in marriage; male–female differences and common pitfalls; and parenting and family life. Each session is designed to open honest conversations and offer tools you can actually use once the big day is over. Location: Veszprém.

Wine Tasting for Couples

As part of Marriage Week, couples can slip into an elegant, intimate setting at the Gizella Hotel and Restaurant (Veszprém, 48 Jókai Mór Street [Jókai Mór utca 48]) for a special paired wine tasting on February 11 at 18:00. Entry is free, but spots are limited and require registration. Expect a relaxed evening where the focus is on time together, conversation, and the harmony of flavors. The Archdiocese of Veszprém brings a curated selection of wines to help couples step out of the daily rush, savor a glass, and strengthen the joy of paying attention to each other. Location: Veszprém.

Biblical Role-Play for Kids

Back by popular demand, the biblical role-play series invites children aged 7–10 to develop social skills and emotional intelligence through playful storytelling and guided activities. The venue is the Gizella Hall of the Archdiocesan Office in Veszprém, 8200 Veszprém, 18/2 Jutasi Road (Jutasi út 18/2). Sunday dates: February 15, March 1, March 15, March 29, April 12, and April 26. It’s a warm, structured environment where kids can step into stories, learn empathy, and build confidence while making new friends. Location: Veszprém.

With Mindszenty – Appointment Anniversary Walk

On Thursday, March 5, at 15:30, the Archdiocese of Veszprém leads a Castle District walk marking the memorial day of József Mindszenty’s appointment as Bishop of Veszprém. The route threads through the Courthouse building to the Castle Prison Visitor Center, blending city history with church memory. The guided tour is led by Father Krisztián Tornavölgyi, director of the archbishop’s office. Participation is free but requires registration. All are warmly welcome to walk, listen, and reflect. Location: Veszprém.

Adam Play and Palm Sunday Live Passion

The deepest mystery of the Christian faith comes alive in Veszprém at the end of March, inviting everyone to let the story of Jesus Christ’s Passion, crucifixion, and resurrection move heart and mind. On Palm Sunday, March 29, starting at 15:00, the Live Passion mystery play guides participants through the city’s emblematic sites: the Séd Stream valley, the hauntingly beautiful Margaret (Margit) Ruins, and up to Benedict (Benedek) Hill. The route turns the city into a living stage for contemplation and community.

This year adds something new: on Saturday, March 28, at 19:00, the Adam Play premieres within the walls of the Margaret (Margit) Ruins. This Old French mystery play is among Europe’s earliest known dramas, contemporaneous with the Hungarian Funeral Sermon. It tells the story of the Fall: the tempter overcomes the first human pair, yet alongside judgment comes the promise of the Savior’s arrival—a promise that still shapes human existence today. You’re warmly invited on March 29 at 15:00 for the Palm Sunday Live Passion, and the evening before at 19:00 for the debut of the Adam Play. Location: Veszprém.

Pros
+
Family-friendly mix: kids’ role-play sessions, guided walks, and outdoor passion plays mean there’s something for every age, not just churchgoers
+
Internationally recognizable theme: Holy Week/Passion plays are widely known, so even first-timers can follow the story without deep background
+
Veszprém is a charming, safe small city near Lake Balaton—less touristy than Budapest but known enough to feel welcoming to foreigners
+
Little to no Hungarian needed for the outdoor processions and walks; visuals, staging, and context carry the experience, and organizers often handle basic English for registration
+
Easy access: roughly 1.5–2 hours from Budapest by direct train or car; events are clustered in the compact historic center, walkable once you’re there
+
Budget-friendly: many events are free with registration, good value compared to similar European Holy Week spectacles
+
Unique venues (Margit Ruins, Séd valley, Castle District) give it a scenic, old-town vibe that rivals small-city passion plays in Spain or Italy without the crowds
Cons
Some parts (marriage prep course, kids’ workshops) skew local and may be Hungarian-only, limiting depth for non-speakers
Veszprém isn’t a marquee international destination, so planning logistics (registrations, updates) may require extra effort and patience
Weather risk in late March: outdoor performances can be chilly or rainy, and seating/shelter are minimal
Compared with big-name passion plays (e.g., Oberammergau, Spain’s Semana Santa), production scale is modest—more community pageant than blockbuster spectacle
