Veszprém’s castle district is opening its doors again in 2026 with guided walks that weave together a thousand years of history. Wander these hilltop streets and you don’t just see buildings; you feel the current of continuity that has shaped the City of Queens for a millennium. The atmosphere is unmistakable, the stories intimate, and the access rare—several locations open only with a guide.

Weekend walks from the heart of the city

The most popular weekend program runs at three times: 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. Each tour departs from outside the Biró–Giczey House at Vár utca 31, 8200 Veszprém, with schedules and any changes posted in the events calendar. These routes open doors usually closed to the public: the Archbishop’s Palace with Baroque interiors and refreshed spaces; the hushed, ancient Gizella Chapel layered with medieval fresco fragments; the commanding St. Michael’s Cathedral with its evocative crypt; and the rarely accessible St. George’s Chapel in the castle’s core. Group size is capped at 25, and the walk lasts about 60 minutes.

Two themed routes, one hill full of secrets

Pick your path. The “Walk of Light and Reverence” pairs the Archbishop’s Palace with the Gizella Chapel—one a showcase of art and power, the other a pocket of sacred stillness. “A Thousand Years’ Way” moves through St. Michael’s Cathedral, its underground crypt, and St. George’s Chapel, layering architecture, legend, and archaeology into a living timeline. Tours run Saturdays and Sundays: 11:30 and 16:00 for the Walk of Light and Reverence, and 14:00 for A Thousand Years’ Way. Liturgical or special events can shift times, so check the calendar and arrive 10–15 minutes early due to the headcount limit.

Inside St. Michael’s: vaults, silence, and time

The cathedral route goes deeper this year. Visitors explore the 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, the Baroque tomb of Bishop Márton Padányi Bíró, and a carefully restored interior. The crypt’s atmosphere—the hush under ribbed vaults, the sensation of time sealed in stone—stands out as one of the season’s most memorable moments.

St. George’s Chapel: vows, relics, and origins

North of the cathedral, St. George’s Chapel stands among the oldest Christian sites in Hungary. Archaeologists have exposed the foundations of its original 10th-century rotunda. Tradition says Prince Emeric (Imre) took his vow here before the Virgin’s altar, deepening the spot’s spiritual pull. In the Middle Ages it was a prominent pilgrimage site, keeper of St. George’s head relic, a gift from the Byzantine emperor to King Stephen (István).

Free exhibitions at the Biró–Giczey House

Everything here is free during opening hours. Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Burdock and Lily – The Flowers of the Magdalenes), winner of the 2025 Exhibition of the Year, traces Mary Magdalene via artifacts, engravings, and contemporary reflections threaded with the words of Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi. The “Pantry Exhibition” brings out Baroque objects, liturgical pieces, and century-old photographs from the cathedral’s past. “My Head Isn’t a Chapter” is interactive, explaining who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter worked. The archaeology show maps the castle hill’s changing settlement story through striking installations.
