when: 2026. March 11., Wednesday

Veszprém rolls into spring with a full calendar from the Archdiocese: exhibitions, concerts, family and kids’ programs, guided walks, themed tours, popular talks, red-letter and holy day events, and liturgies. It’s a season stitched together by prayer, music, and community—quiet auras, big choirs, and a living passion winding through the city’s most iconic sites.

Exhibition Opening: On the Road to Ourselves, On the Road to God

March 12, 1:00 p.m., Veszprém Archdiocesan College (Veszprémi Érseki Főiskola), Aula. Through April 30. Sister Tünde M. Erzsébet Takács (SAF) brings eighteen modern works that trace a deeply personal inner journey. For her, creation wasn’t just painting—it was a silent passage through hardship, where colors, shapes, and gestures slowly became prayer. Each piece pairs with a brief line from the Psalms and reflection questions, inviting not only contemplation but a pause that nudges us toward our path—to ourselves and to God.

Marriage Preparation Course in Veszprém

March 13, Padányi School, 6 Szeghlety J. Street, Veszprém. A practical, heart-and-head training for couples heading toward marriage and family life. Topics: the spirituality of marriage; the family we come from; communication and conflict resolution; intimacy in marriage; male-female differences and common pitfalls; parenting and family life. It’s the sturdy toolkit you wish you had before the tough days, and the shared language that keeps the tender days glowing.

Lenten Musical Devotion at St. Michael Cathedral

March 14, Saturday, 7:00 p.m., St. Michael Cathedral (Szent Mihály Főszékesegyház). The Cantabile Vocal Ensemble of Veszprém (conductor: Mária Petrőcz Veres Györgyné) joins forces with Kaposvár’s CapPuccini Choir (conductor: Zoltán Szili) for a contemplative evening. Two choirs, one purpose: to quiet the heart, draw us deep, and bring us closer—through music—to the mystery of Christ’s Passion and redeeming love. Admission is free. All are warmly welcome.

Guided Castle Walks

March 14, 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., Veszprém. Lace up for curated strolls through the castle district—time-slotted and paced for discovery.

Biblical Role-Play for Kids

Sundays for ages 7–10 at the Archdiocesan Office, Gizella Hall, 8200 Veszprém, 18/2 Jutasi Road. Upcoming dates: March 15, March 29, April 12, April 26. This is a social skills and emotional intelligence workshop disguised as adventure, letting kids embody Scripture and learn empathy, listening, and teamwork in a lively, age-appropriate way.

Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi: Day of Martyrdom

March 23, St. Michael Cathedral, 6:00 p.m. Mass. The remembrance marks her martyrdom and closes the Blessed Mária Magdolna Bódi 80 commemorative year. The St. Michael Choir serves at the liturgy, offering a solemn choral frame to an enduring witness of faith and courage.

Mindszenty Day with Children’s Choir

March 25, 6:00 p.m., Church of the Risen Savior, Veszprém. On the anniversary of József Mindszenty’s consecration as bishop of Veszprém, the St. Michael Children’s Choir leads music at Mass—young voices ringing across a city that remembers its shepherds.

Adam Play and Palm Sunday Live Passion

March 28–29, Veszprém. On Saturday, March 28, 7:00 p.m., the Adam Play (Ádám-játék) premieres within the walls of the Margaret Ruins (Margit-romok)—an Old French mystery play, among Europe’s earliest dramas, contemporary with Hungary’s Funeral Oration. It stages the Fall: the tempter overcomes the first couple; alongside punishment comes the promise of a Redeemer, a thread that still shapes human life.
On Sunday, March 29, from 3:00 p.m., the Palm Sunday Live Passion processes through Veszprém’s iconic settings: along the Séd Creek valley, through the Margaret Ruins (Margit-romok), up to Benedict Hill (Benedek-hegy). To walk it is to let the Passion, the Cross, and the Resurrection move through us and touch the soul. All are warmly invited to both the Saturday Adam Play and the Sunday Live Passion.

Cathedral Choir on Palm Sunday Morning

March 29, 10:30 a.m., St. Michael Cathedral, Veszprém. The Padányi Schola sings at the archiepiscopal Mass, including the chanting of the Passion—ancient narrative, living voice.

Concerts Ahead

April 12: Biblical Role-Play for Kids continues at Gizella Hall, 8200 Veszprém, 18/2 Jutasi Road.
April 15: A joint concert by Martin Baker and Tamás Kéméndi promises a virtuoso evening—organ meets artistry, detail meets drama.
May 28: János Pálúr presents The Creation Story (Teremtéstörténet), a sonic meditation on beginnings, where musical architecture meets Genesis awe.

Organizers reserve the right to change programs and times.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe: kids’ role-play workshops, gentle guided walks, and choirs make it easy to bring all ages
+
Lots of free or low-cost entries (choir events, processions), so you can sample plenty without blowing the budget
+
Internationally familiar themes (Easter/Lent, cathedral music, mystery plays) make it easy to connect even if you’re not local
+
Veszprém is a known stop for culture-focused travelers, near Lake Balaton and about 90 minutes from Budapest—doable as a day trip
+
You won’t need fluent Hungarian for music, liturgies, or processions; visuals and vibes carry a lot, and some staff speak English
+
Access is straightforward: trains and buses from Budapest run often; driving is easy with good roads and city parking near the castle district
+
Compared with similar Holy Week/Lenten events in Europe, it’s more intimate and less touristy than, say, Seville or Rome, with strong choir culture akin to Central European cathedrals
Cons
Some talks, marriage prep, and signage may be Hungarian-only, which can limit depth for non-speakers
Dates are clustered in March–April, so timing matters; miss a weekend and you miss key highlights
Crowds around Palm Sunday processions can be dense, and standing/walking routes have cobblestones and hills
If you want blockbuster spectacles, it’s subtler than big-city counterparts and can feel niche outside the main services and plays
