Be Crowned and Cheer the Champions

Members of the Order of Saint George stage a full-blooded knightly tournament, showing how warriors once fought for the king’s and queen’s favor in medieval Visegrád. The show kicks off by choosing a king and queen from the audience, dressing them in royal cloaks and placing crowns on their heads. At the king’s command, knights march in and prove their aim and close-combat skills with period weapons before the royal couple and their guests. The duels feel authentic, thrilling, and often witty, while a royal hunting falcon swoops overhead. At the finale, guests can handle and try medieval weapons under expert guidance.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe: audience-picked king/queen, falconry, and hands-on weapon tryouts keep kids and teens engaged
+
Show offered in English (also German/Italian), so you can follow the action without Hungarian
+
Easy day trip from Budapest to Visegrád in the Danube Bend; reachable by bus/boat/car and short local taxis or walks
+
Good value for a full program (tower briefing, jousting show with drinks, and a big themed feast) at roughly $40 adults/$20 kids
+
Winter dates are a rare chance to catch a medieval show in the off-season, when crowds are lighter
+
Location has bonus sightseeing (Solomon Tower rooftop views, Danube scenery), great for photos
+
Themed feast is abundant and kid-pleasing (turkey drumstick, ribs, chicken, ice cream), with veggie sides for picky eaters
Cons
Visegrád is less internationally famous than Budapest or Prague castles, so expectations should be set to local/regional scale
Limited dates (late December) and the organizer can change the schedule; advance email booking adds friction for travelers
Drinks at the feast aren’t included, and transport between tower and restaurant may require a short, potentially chilly walk
Compared to bigger European medieval shows (e.g., Spain/UK castle tournaments), production scale is smaller, more intimate than grand-spectacle
