Visegrád’s living-history town calls you back to the Middle Ages every Saturday this fall. Book early so you don’t miss one of the Danube Bend’s most exciting family programs. Organized by the Renaissance Restaurant, the Visegrád Knights’ Games hurl you into 14th-century pageantry and steel at the Palotaház (Palace House), with a guaranteed start every Saturday at noon.

Pageantry, duels, and a royal twist

Members of the Order of Saint George stage a spectacular tournament, showing how warriors once fought for the favor of the king and queen in medieval Visegrád. At the start, the knights pick a king and queen from the crowd, robe and crown them, then parade in at the monarch’s command to prove their aim and combat skills with period weapons. The duels are realistic, exciting, and sprinkled with humor, evoking knightly courage and recklessness. A royal hunting falcon takes flight to brighten the show, and at the end guests can try medieval weapons with the knights’ help.

Schedule and languages

12:00 Historical briefing in Solomon Tower (Salamon-torony) plus rooftop visit. 12:30 Tournament show by the tower with drinks offered (white wine, apple juice). 13:30 Royal feast at the Renaissance Restaurant. Programs can run at any time for groups of 30 or more. The show is held in Hungarian, German, English, and Italian; other languages with an interpreter.

Pros
+
Super family-friendly vibe: kids get crowned king/queen, watch falcons fly, and even try safe medieval weapons with guidance
+
Clear English availability (plus German and Italian), so you won’t be lost without Hungarian
+
Easy weekend planning: guaranteed Saturday noon start with a tidy schedule (tower tour, show, then feast)
+
Good value for a full program and big medieval feast at around $39 adults/$19.50 kids
+
Visegrád and the Danube Bend are famous in Hungary and known to many European travelers, offering castle views and scenic river bends that wow first-time U.S. visitors
+
Reachable from Budapest in about an hour by car or a scenic combo (train/bus or Danube boat then bus/taxi), so it’s a straightforward day trip
+
Compared to medieval shows in places like Germany or the UK, this feels more intimate and hands-on, with real historical settings (Solomon Tower) and less tourist-trap pricing - International name recognition isn’t on the level of, say, Windsor or Carcassonne, so friends back home may not instantly know it
Cons
Public transport requires a transfer and timetable check; driving is simpler but parking in peak season can be tight
Booking only via email with the restaurant feels old-school and may be awkward across time zones
Drinks at the feast aren’t included, and the hearty meat-heavy menu may not suit vegetarians or picky eaters
