Choose a King and Queen

Members of the Order of Saint George stage a spectacular tournament, showing how warriors once battled for the favor of a king and queen in medieval Visegrád. At the start, knights select a king and queen from the audience, robe them in royal mantles, and crown them. At the king’s command, the knights parade in and, with authentic weapons, prove their aim and dueling skills before the royal couple and guests. Duels are vivid, exciting, and sometimes cheeky, channeling the courage and audacity of medieval chivalry. A royal hawk takes flight to add flair. At the finale, guests can try period weapons with help from the knights.

Pros
+
Super family-friendly: live jousts, audience-chosen king and queen, rooftop tower visit, and kids can try safe period weapons at the end
+
Easy for English speakers: show offered in Hungarian, German, English, and Italian, so you won’t miss the story beats
+
Good value for a day out: about $38.70 adults/$19.40 kids including show, tower visit, drinks at the show, and a big feast
+
Memorable local flavor: real medieval setting in Visegrád with hawk flight and Order of Saint George performers for authentic vibes
+
Conveniently reachable from Budapest: roughly an hour by car; public transport via train/bus + local bus or boat in season makes it doable
+
Food-centric experience: generous Renaissance-style lunch with multiple meats and sides, plus dessert
+
Comparable or better hands-on access than many U.S. renaissance fairs, with closer-up demos and guest participation
Cons
Visegrád isn’t as internationally famous as Budapest or Eger, so first-timers might overlook it
Booking is via email and payment at the restaurant, which can feel old-school and less flexible for travelers
Beverages at the feast aren’t included, and schedule/content can change, which may irk planners
Without a car, weekend public transport timing can be fiddly compared to U.S. drive-in fairs
