On Tuesdays at the Sóstó Open Air Museum (Sóstói Múzeumfalu) in Nyíregyháza, at the Beszterec (Besztereci) homestead, a craft weaving workshop welcomes everyone, where participants can take their finished “masterpiece” home. This program takes visitors back to the world of peasant households, where weaving was traditionally women’s work and continued to play an important role even after factory-made textiles became widespread.
Recycled Rag Blankets
In the past, worn-out clothing didn’t end up in the trash: colorful strips of fabric were woven into rag blankets. These were used to cover the oven bench or the wooden bench, and in the stable they served as blankets or sheets. In the workshop, participants learn the basics of weaving by making a small rag rug, with a tangible, practical result to take home.
Duration, capacity, price
The program lasts 50 minutes, with a maximum of 30 participants. Participation fee: 500 HUF per person (about 1.38 USD). Location: Sóstó Open Air Museum (Sóstói Múzeumfalu), Beszterec (Besztereci) homestead, Nyíregyháza. The Tuesday sessions are ideal for school groups, families, and anyone who would like to try ancient weaving techniques and take home a handmade piece.
