The Veszprém Castle District is offering a warm welcome this winter with atmospheric walks, award-winning exhibitions, and a festive schedule centered around the Biró–Giczey House. Baroque facades glow softly, silence settles over Holy Trinity (Szentháromság) Square, and bell chimes ripple through the narrow streets. The Archiepiscopal Tourism Center invites visitors to go beyond the postcard views of Castle (Vár) Street and step inside the palaces, chapels, and galleries that tell Veszprém’s real story.

The Biró–Giczey House serves as the Baroque gateway to the district: guided castle walks start here, there’s a gift shop, and several exhibitions are free to enter. One highlight, Thistle and Lily – Flowers of the Magdalens (Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai), was honored as Exhibition of the Year 2025, bringing Mary Magdalene (Mária Magdolna) to life through artifacts, engravings, and contemporary responses intertwined with reflections by Blessed Magdolna Mária Bódi (Boldog Bódi Mária Magdolna).

Festive Opening Hours

During December, hours shift for the holidays. The district is closed December 22–26. It reopens December 27–30, Saturday to Tuesday, 10:00–18:00, and on December 31, Wednesday, 10:00–15:00. Outside the festive period, regular hours apply: Monday closed; Tuesday–Friday, 17:00–19:00; Saturday–Sunday, 10:00–18:00. The Biró–Giczey House gift shop welcomes weekend visitors 10:00–18:00.

Guided Castle Walks

The weekend headliners run at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00, unlocking spaces not accessible on your own. Stops include the Archiepiscopal Palace with renewed Baroque interiors and distinctive artifacts; the tranquil Gizella Chapel, one of the oldest sacred spaces in the district, where medieval fresco fragments set a rarefied mood; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, where the basilica’s past and medieval details sketch an authentic portrait of Veszprém; and the St. George (Szent György) Chapel, an ancient sanctuary only visitable on a guided tour. Tours depart from the Biró–Giczey House; check the events calendar for current times and updates. Tickets and information are available in the gift shop.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with gentle walks, chapels, and interactive exhibits kids and grandparents can both enjoy
+
Free entry to all Biró–Giczey House exhibitions keeps costs down for families
+
Guided tours unlock normally closed sites (cathedral crypt, St. George Chapel), so you get real “behind-the-scenes” value
+
Winter atmosphere in a compact castle district makes for easy strolling with strollers and seniors
+
Veszprém is a short hop from Budapest by car or train, and parking and signage around the castle area are straightforward
+
No deep knowledge of the topic needed—exhibits are visually rich and approachable, even if you’re not into church history
+
Compared with old-town strolls in Prague or Vienna, crowds are lighter and the experience feels more intimate and local - International name recognition is modest—both Veszprém and the Mary Magdalene–focused exhibit are less famous than big-city monuments
Cons
English availability can vary on tours and labels; some Hungarian terms and church history references may need a translation app
Holiday closures and narrow time windows (limited tour slots, Monday closures) can trip up tight itineraries
If you crave big, hands-on kids’ activities, this skews more reflective and sacred than play-oriented compared to, say, UK museum trail experiences
