Zalakaros Ice Rink Shines All Winter
Skate Zalakaros Ice Rink on Karos Promenade: winter lights, music, 800 m² ice, rentals, family fun, kids’ hockey, and late hours through Jan 31, 2026. Glide all day.
when: 2026.01.12., Monday - 2026.01.18., Sunday
where: 8749 Zalakaros, Szőlő utca 16.

Zalakaros keeps the ice magic going through January 31, 2026, with lights, music, and a sweeping 800-square-meter rink on the Karos Promenade (Karos Korzó). It’s an 115 by 75-foot surface built for smooth glides, wobbly first steps, and everything in between. Glittery beanie, Christmas sweater, or I’m-just-watching face — you’ll still end up doing a lap. Hot drinks are coming in, lights are warming up, and yes, they’re waiting for you.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with penguin skate aids for kids, wide size range of rentals, and mellow music-lights setup that works for all ages
+
Affordable pricing by U.S. standards, with cheap day tickets and reasonable skate rentals so a family can spend hours without breaking the bank
+
No time limit on day tickets means you can take breaks for hot drinks and jump back on the ice whenever
+
Open late on weekends and even past midnight on New Year’s, so you can fit it around travel days
+
Easy enough without Hungarian: simple ticketing, universal rink rules, and staff at touristy spas nearby often speak some English
+
Zalakaros is a known spa town, so pairing the rink with thermal baths makes a unique winter combo you won’t get at most U.S. resort rinks
+
Compared with small-town rinks elsewhere in Europe, the price-to-ice-size ratio is great and the scene is less crowded than big-city seasonal rinks - The rink and town aren’t internationally famous, so it won’t be as iconic as skating in Budapest, Vienna, or NYC
Cons
Getting there can be a trek: Zalakaros is far from Budapest; you’ll likely need a car or multiple bus/train connections
Maintenance breaks (20 minutes, 2–3 times daily) can interrupt your session, especially with kids just getting into the groove
Outside basic interactions, limited English signage/info may make event rentals or hockey sign-ups trickier without a local helper
