Zánka, the laid-back holiday village tucked at the foot of Hegyestű on Lake Balaton’s north shore, is gearing up for a lively 2026. The calendar blends festivals, family days, wine gatherings, and active community classes across multiple venues in town. Locals and visitors can dip into culture, gastronomy, and outdoor hangouts—then retreat to a spread of family-run guesthouses and panoramic apartments. Organizers reserve the right to change dates and programs, so check ahead and keep an eye on community updates and the village Facebook page.
What’s On and When
The season kicks off with a kid favorite on July 15: a Paper Theatre fairy-tale session with crafts at the library, perfect for younger audiences and parents in need of a cool indoor hour.
On July 16, 23, and 30, the Faluház (Community Center) hosts Women’s Fitness classes by registration only. These sessions are popular during peak season; book in advance to secure a spot.
Zánka turns properly festive on July 25–26 with Halásznapok (Fishermen’s Days). Expect lakeside vibes, local flavors, and a busy weekend crowd flocking for music, food, and that classic Balaton summer atmosphere.
Wine leads the way July 28–31 with Zánkai Bornapok (Zánka Wine Days), showcasing the Nivegy Valley and Káli Basin’s characterful bottles. Tastings often come paired with snacks and casual music, and events run across multiple locations around town.
Rounding out the peak season, Zánkai Családi Napok (Zánka Family Days) arrives August 1–3, packing family-friendly programs, outdoor games, and community fun that brings together locals, returning regulars, and first-timers.
Stay: From Garden Terraces to Lake Views
If you want to sleep well after the festivals, Zánka delivers. The Aliz Holiday House is a comfortable pick for families and couples in a quiet neighborhood: one bedroom with two beds, a living room with satellite TV and two more beds, a fully equipped kitchen, a shower room with toilet, and a terrace with garden furniture. It’s a classic Balaton setup that keeps things easy between swims and tastings.
Several homes split into two apartments sit on Balaton’s northern side within Zánka, offering a calm setting and a quick hop to beaches and trails. These are built for those who want a quiet base without sacrificing the resort-town perks.
Groups should look for the large holiday house for 4–10 guests, about 600 meters from the beach with a lake view. A big yard with garden furniture, grilling space, and secure parking makes it ideal for families or a group of friends plotting sunsets and barbecues.
Families gravitate to Fügekert, a central, family-run stay at the gateway to the Káli Basin. Mornings feature artisanal breakfasts made from local producers’ goods. By evening, the terrace serves up fine Káli Basin wines, handcrafted cordials, and seasonal treats in a postcard setting. It’s also kid-friendly, with services that make traveling with little ones easier.
Another quiet bet is the Léda Holiday House, 1,000 meters from the lake—a calm neighborhood base tailor-made for a peaceful break.
For a cozy wine-country experience, look near the beach: just 820 feet from the Balaton shore sits an accommodation with four rooms for up to 12 guests, above a cellar storing six kinds of house-made wine. The leafy garden offers lounge chairs under shade trees—ideal for an afternoon tasting session.
Smaller groups can grab a separate-entrance apartment with a panoramic lake view for 2–6 guests. If you’re traveling as a larger party, a guesthouse with three apartments (sleeping up to 10 in total) can be rented together or separately, making it easy to tailor the layout for families and friends.
Eat and Drink: From Bistro Flair to Traditional Plates
Zánka’s food scene runs from modern bistro plates to sturdy Hungarian classics. One contemporary European-style bistro caters thoughtfully to gluten- and dairy-sensitive guests, with vegetarian and vegan favorites each season. The bar leans proudly local: cocktails made exclusively with Hungarian gin and a tight lineup of quality Champagne. Curiosities that win over repeat diners include duck liver with salted strawberries and an oversized túrógombóc (cottage cheese dumpling). You don’t have to be a Zen Garden Resort guest to book a table—just swing by.
Fügekert, beyond lodging, draws food lovers for breakfasts crafted from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Return at dusk for Káli Basin wines, handcrafted syrups, and small bites on the terrace—one of those effortlessly charming Balaton evenings included.
Wine-wise, Lídia Borház pours bottles made from its own harvest in a cellar and vinotheque setting, with both barrel and bottled options to drink on-site or take away, including through an online shop. Grapes from top sites are fermented with technical care, blending traditional methods and modern processes, with increasing shares bottled each vintage.
If you’re heading for lunch with a view, Skanzen Panoráma Placc sits near Hegyestű at the foot of Tagyon Hill, a breezy snack stop known for stone-baked pizzas, tortillas, and local wines—ideal between hikes and swims.
For hearty Hungarian flavors, Theodora Étterem beside Route 71 welcomes guests from March to December with regional wines from the Zánka–Nivegy Valley, weekend specials, and a warm, easygoing atmosphere. They host business lunches, family gatherings, and weddings for up to 110 guests year-round.
Elsewhere in town, lunch and dinner menus feature fresh, seasonal ingredients from Balaton Uplands smallholders, backed by artisanal wines, homemade cordials, and a slate of regional specialties that change with the market.
