Zengővárkony’s Míves Tojás Múzeum (Handcrafted Egg Museum) throws open its doors from March 29 to April 6 with a full slate of Easter events at 7720 Zengővárkony, 6 Kossuth Lajos Street. The celebration kicks off on Palm Sunday with a national youth egg-writing competition, continues through Holy Week with daily decorating demos and hands-on workshops, and wraps up on Easter Monday with a folk heritage show. Organizers reserve the right to change times and programs, so keep an eye out for updates.
On Sunday, March 29, the museum’s traditional Holy Week series starts with a short opening at 13:30 in the square outside. Founder Dr. Rózsa Nienhaus delivers the welcome, followed by a compact cultural program featuring tárogató artist István Borsós with his ensemble and the Zengővárkonyi Dalos Pacsirták (Zengővárkony Song Larks) choir. From 14:15, the Országos Ifjúsági Tojásíró Verseny (National Youth Egg-Writing Competition) takes center stage, drawing young decorators to test their skills in classic techniques passed down through generations.
From Monday, March 30 to Friday, April 3, the “Hímestojás Szeretteinknek” (Decorated Eggs for Our Loved Ones) program runs daily, 10:00–18:00. Seasoned egg artists guide visitors of all ages through a range of traditional methods: wax-resist writing, magrátétes appliqué, and fine-line scratching offered on Thursday and Friday. The ever-popular tojáspatkolás—intricate egg “shoeing” with tiny metal elements—can be admired and even tried from Monday to Wednesday. Good Friday adds bead-appliqué techniques, and from 10:00 to 14:00 there’s a special slot for making straw ornaments. Throughout the week, stations also invite guests to dive into straw decoration and bead threading, with expert help ensuring everyone leaves with something personal and festive. The ethos is simple: the best gifts are the ones you make yourself.
Easter Sunday, April 5, starts early for kids with a painted-egg hunt from 9:00 across the streets of Zengővárkony—an open-air adventure that turns the village into a holiday playground. On Easter Monday, April 6, at 11:00, the Zengővárkonyi Hagyományőrző Művelődési Egyesület (Zengővárkony Traditional Heritage Cultural Association) closes the series with an Easter performance in front of the museum, a fitting capstone to a week of shared craft, music, and community.
Everyone is warmly invited to join, try the tools, and take home their own masterpiece.
