Every Saturday morning in Pécs, the country’s oldest still-operating brewery opens its doors for a two-hour deep dive into malt, hops, and history. The Pécs Brewery (Pécsi Sörfőzde) tour blends a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process with a guided tasting in the brewery’s showroom, and it runs year-round—yes, even through the holidays.
Tours take place 10:00–12:00, with start times adjusted to the number of participants. Advance registration is required by Thursday 20:00, and bookings are only confirmed after you receive a reply. The visit costs 4,000 HUF per person, and that includes the guided tasting. Groups larger than 15 can arrange weekday slots, making it a flexible pick for team-building or beer-loving friend groups.
The meeting point is 7600 Pécs, Tavasz Street (Tavasz utca) 13. The contact person is József Aradi. To register, send an email with your planned number of participants. If you’ve ever wanted to see how grains become beer and why fermentation deserves more respect, this is the place to learn it—straight from the staff who run the brewhouse.
What You’ll See (and Taste)
Guides walk you through the full production journey, from mashing and boiling to fermentation. Along the way you’ll get up close to the equipment, the raw ingredients, and the steps that separate a crisp lager from a malty seasonal. It’s informative without being fussy, and the payoff is the finale: a professional-led tasting in the showroom featuring the brewery’s specialties. Expect a sensory primer on aroma, flavor, and style differences, plus tips on pairing and storage.

Where to Stay
Pécs makes it easy to turn beer school into a weekend. In the historic center, Adele Boutique Hotel brings four-star comfort to a protected 19th-century building, matching period charm with contemporary interiors across rooms and apartments. Nearby, Barbakán Hotel sits just behind Pécs Cathedral with 16 rooms (double, triple, quadruple), a conference room, and a garage—handy if you’re rolling in by car.
For leafy views over the city, Bagolyvár offers a restful perch on Havihegy, famous for its clean air and panoramic outlook toward the Zengő side of Pécs. The twist? Nineteen rooms inspired by Hungarian folk art and six suites designed like traditional press houses, each channeling the mood of a classic Hungarian wine. Expect Hungarian and international dishes in the restaurant, with a soft spot for old-school Magyar recipes and sweets.
Prefer villa-district calm without losing city access? Several family-run guesthouses in the Mecsek hillside neighborhood put you five minutes from forest trails and about the same from downtown. The local zoo and the Da Vinci Private Clinic (Da Vinci Magánklinika) are close by, and Mandulás—one of the city’s favorite recreational spots—offers playgrounds, fire pits, and walking paths toward the TV Tower. Groups can even request free guided hikes.
Eat, Drink, Repeat
Pair the brewery tour with a local food crawl. For a morning sugar rush, Angyali Kísértés Chocolate Shop sells handcrafted bonbons and home-style pastries. The city center serves up everything from fast, affordable lunch menus to lingering dinners.
Craving classic comfort? You’ll find generous portions across Hungarian staples, grilled meats, stuffed specialties, fish dishes, oven-baked plates, risottos, and pasta—plus salads, soups, and desserts in abundance. There’s also a modern bistro near the Balkans’ gateway spirit: fresh, home-style flavors, casual plating, and friendly pricing, all anchored by quality ingredients.
Aranykacsa Restaurant (Aranykacsa Étterem) leans into local sourcing and wine culture. Head to the Vinarium (Vinárium) for tastings, the Tüke room for everyday sipping and dining, the Zsolnay room for family or protocol meals, and the upstairs Dakk hall and garden for weddings, banquets, or birthdays.
Bohemia Beer Kitchen (Bohemia Sörkonyha) in the city center is exactly what it says: Beer – Burger – BBQ. Big Bell Restaurant (Big Bell Étterem) adds a craft show brewery and beer garden to the mix. For flexible all-day vibes, PAULUS morphs from café in the morning to self-service restaurant at noon and a beer spot come evening, with regular events.
If speed is key, Borostyán Fast Food (Borostyán Gyorsétterem) on Király Street (Király utca) handles weekday lunches 11:00–16:00, focusing on quality at fair prices. Elsewhere downtown, restaurants offer changing daily menus and brisk service so lunch still feels like a treat. Early birds can start at 08:00 with foamy coffee, sandwiches, house pogácsa, and hand-stretched strudel. Many places also handle standing receptions and small events, on-site or off.
