Hegymagas, tucked in the Tapolca Basin at the foot of Saint George Hill (Szent György-hegy) and just 3.1 miles from Lake Balaton, lines up a full year of markets, wine tasting, and tradition-led escapes in 2026. The village leans into wine tourism, food, and heritage with easygoing charm and serious bottles.

Weekly Hegymagas Market

Taste the Badacsony region and shop straight from local producers at the Hegymagas Market on February 7, 14, 21, 28, and March 7, 2026. It’s all about fresh goods, small-batch specialties, and meeting the makers. Location: Hegymagas. More dates will be added throughout the year.

All-Night Wine on the Volcano

June 6–7 brings “Saint George Hill Until Dawn” (Szent György-hegy hajnalig), the hill’s signature night-into-dawn celebration. Expect open cellars, food, and volcanic terroir in the glass under starry skies.

Stay and Sip

Kovács Guesthouse (Kovács Vendégház) welcomes guests year-round in Hegymagas—an ideal base for tastings and trails.

Tiny Plots, Big Focus

One boutique winery farms two parcels of two hectares each on Saint George Hill (Szent György-hegy) in the Badacsony wine region—its name nods to its pocket size and hands-on care. Unusually for the area, the spotlight is on reds. Book ahead for cellar visits. A six-wine flight showcases the estate’s top picks in a two-hour guided tasting.

Family Roots, Hillwide

Another family operation cultivates 49.4 acres across the southern slopes, pairing winery life with agritourism and bookable guesthouses.

Craft, Character, Memory

Claiming to be the hill’s smallest winery, one cellar crafts distinctive, artisanal, delicatessen-style wines from rare local varieties—tasted in a setting designed to stick in your memory.

Volcanic Signature

Róbert Gilvesy founded his label in 2012. The vinotheque sells during opening hours and by appointment; delivery available. Tasting programs on request.

Grapes and Styles

One Hegymagas family winery pours Olaszrizling, Rizlingszilváni, Zengő, Tramini, Rhine Riesling (Rajnai rizling), Chardonnay, and Rózsakő.

Tradition Meets Tech

Horváth Cellar (Horváth Pince), welcoming wine lovers since 1996 on the southern face, farms 44.5 acres. Alongside modern processing, select wines mature longer in oak.

Views, Classics, Ease

Nyári Cellar (Nyári Pince) sits 219 yards from the Tarányi Cellar and Lengyel Chapel, serving excellent wines with sweeping views; both draft and bottled are available. Tastings by reservation.

Open Year-Round

The Saint George Hill (Szent György-hegy) estate vinotheque is open daily, year-round. From spring to fall, the refreshed Estate Center’s Viridárium kitchen caters to food and wine travelers.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe: weekly markets, open-air tastings, and easy trails mean kids can tag along while adults sip
+
Internationally recognizable hook: Lake Balaton and “volcanic wines” give it a cool, memorable angle even if you’ve never heard of Hegymagas
+
Location perks: 3 miles from Lake Balaton, with panoramic hill views and cute chapels, so you can mix wine time with lake time
+
Little to no Hungarian needed: many wineries serving visitors use basic English, tastings are straightforward, and reservations can be handled online/email
+
Easy access by car: well-signed Balaton region roads; short drives between cellars and guesthouses
+
Public transport workable: trains/buses to Tapolca/Badacsony, then short taxi or bike to the hill
+
Stacks up well versus similar European wine nights: “until dawn” open-cellar vibe rivals Austria/Italy events but with smaller crowds and better value
Cons
Family-friendliness drops at night events: late hours and hill paths aren’t ideal for strollers or very young kids
Not a globally famous name: Szent György-hegy/Hegymagas are niche compared to Tuscany or Napa, so less English signage and fewer tour options
Public transport last mile can be tricky after dark: limited late buses/taxis; designated driver needed if winery-hopping
Dates and programs may shift: organizers reserve the right to change plans, so you’ll need to double-check and prebook tastings
