Ultra around Lake Balaton

2026.02.26–03.01. — Siófok anchors a huge season opener: the 16th Balaton Supermarathon (Balaton Szupermaraton) circles the Hungarian Sea in four stages. Go solo, pair up, or form a team of 3–4 or 5–8. Want a taste without the full tour? Marathon+ (Maraton+) lets you join for a single day and cover that stage’s full distance as an individual. Expect four days of vistas, support, and a community kick that nudges you out of your comfort zone—in a good way.

Friday half and a spring marathon

2026.02.27. — Bay Half Marathon (Öböl Félmaraton) throws down a rare Friday race: start in Keszthely, finish in Szigliget, and earn 13.1 miles along the lakeshore. You’ll need to clear the home office with your boss; the rest is handled. Up for a 21 km party?
2026.02.28. — Marathonfüred (Maratonfüred) brings a shoreline spring marathon to Badacsony–Badacsonytomaj. Crush 26.2 miles in likely perfect running weather while the lake wakes from its winter nap.

Half-circle weekend

2026.02.28–03.01. — Half-Balaton Supermarathon (FélBalaton Szupermaraton) covers 94.8 km over two days from Badacsony–Badacsonytomaj. Go solo, pair, 3-person relay, or 5–8-person crew. Split daily stages as you like—three-person relays can get by with roughly 9–12 miles a day. It’s a prime test of grit with scenery to spare.
2026.03.01. — High Bluff Half Marathon (Magaspart Félmaraton) sends you from Balatonkenese to Siófok along the high bluff with lake views and a finish-line surge shared with multi-day runners. Pure finish-line joy.

Spring lights up Budapest

2026.05.17. — 29th Kékes Peak Run & Trail (Kékes Csúcsfutás & Trail): 7.2 miles, 2,201 feet of gain, and the summit of Hungary’s highest peak, on road or trail. Mátrafüred’s air and views make the final steps unforgettable.

Women’s gala and a muddy good time

Distances: 10 km solo or pairs, 5 km, 1.6 miles, 1.6-mile walk, 3×1.2-mile relay, and combos (10+5 km; 10+5+1.6 km; 5+1.6 km). A day to celebrate women—seasoned runners and first steps alike.
2026.06.13. — Brutal Run 15.0 (Brutálfutás 15.0) in Nyáregyháza: the longest 4.3 and 1.4 miles of your life. It’s an easygoing obstacle run light on strength rigs, heavy on pure, messy fun. You won’t finish dry or clean—and that’s the point.

Dive into the city and race the night

2026.06.20. — 4th MOL Campus Bay Swim (MOL Campus Öbölúszás) splashes into BudaPart’s Flava Beach, Budapest District 11 (Újbuda). Open-water distances: 500, 1500, 3000, 4500 meters. You swim, your crew chills or cheers along the green of Kopaszi Dam (Kopaszi-gát).

2026.10.10–10.11. — 41st SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival (SPAR Budapest Maraton Fesztivál) turns Újbuda into Hungary’s biggest mass-sport weekend. October 11 headlines the marathon on a beautiful, varied city course, with shorter distances across both days so everyone can get in on it.

Season closer at the lake, then Santa suits

2026.11.14–11.15. — 23rd Balaton Marathon and Half Marathon (Balaton Maraton és Félmaraton) returns to Siófok for a late-season run fest: marathon, half, lakeside air, and one last push before winter.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe across most events, with kids runs, walks, relays, and chill spectator spots so everyone from toddlers to grandparents can join
+
The Budapest races (Vivicittá, Wizz Air Half, SPAR Marathon) are internationally known and draw big foreign fields, so you won’t feel out of place
+
Budapest as a destination is very well-known to U.S. tourists, with plenty of hotels, cafes, and sightseeing packed around the race weekends
+
You can get by in English—registration, signage, and volunteers at major events are used to foreign runners, and Budapest service staff generally speak English
+
Public transit in Budapest is excellent for start/finish access; Balaton venues are reachable by train or car, with race shuttles/common logistics well organized
+
The calendar mixes bucket-list city routes with unique stuff you don’t see everywhere (night run on Andrássy, open-water bay swim, Lake Balaton cross-swim)
+
Compared with similar events abroad, prices are reasonable, courses are scenic, and crowd support is lively without the overcrowding of majors
Cons
Some Lake Balaton towns and trail/peak events are less known internationally, so first-time visitors may need extra planning for lodging and transfers
Outside Budapest, fewer people speak fluent English, and pre-race info can skew Hungarian—helpful to brush up or rely on translation apps
Friday races (like Bay Half) conflict with work-travel schedules, and multi-day ultras demand more vacation days and logistics
Driving/parking at lake venues can be tight on race days; trains are good but can be crowded, and connections may be slower than U.S. travelers expect
