Every summer, the shimmering Lake Tisza (Tisza-tó) transforms into an open-air concert hall, a theater for adventure, and a haven for relaxation. The Nature Opera House Lake Tisza Festival (Tisza-tavi Fesztivál), now entering its twelfth year in 2025, isn’t just about music – it’s about moving, unwinding, and feeling truly alive, surrounded by Hungary’s most enchanting waterscape. Pack your bike, lace up your running shoes, or grab a paddle: culture here means getting active in the great outdoors!
A Weekend Full of Culture and Motion
From August 1 to 3, 2025, towns around Lake Tisza (Tisza-tó) play host to this uniquely Hungarian festival, blending soul-stirring music with outdoor revelry. Kicking off Friday evening in the main square of Tiszafüred, the grand To’Pera Gala Concert sets the tone. Here, Erika Miklósa—recipient of the Order of Saint Stephen, Kossuth Prize, and Liszt Ferenc Prize, and a legendary coloratura soprano—takes center stage alongside protégé singers from the Quintessence Master School (Kvintesszencia Mesteriskola). The evening comes together under the direction of Péter Novák, a celebrated actor, singer, and lyricist, and is hosted by Bea Csete. Best of all, the opening gala is free for everyone.
Saturday: Cycle Around the Lake with Music at Every Stop
Saturday is when things truly get moving—literally. The annual “Cycle Around Lake Tisza (Tisza-tó)” sets off from the Bicycle Center of Tiszafüred. Riders gather from 8 to 9 AM, with the 5,900 HUF (about $16) registration granting access to a full day of scenic rides and live music stops. Each station features performances by acclaimed Hungarian musicians and actors:
– At Poroszló’s Dolphin Marina (Delfin Kikötő), Zoltán Orosz, the renowned accordionist, sets the pace.
– In Sarud’s Adventure Village (Élményfalu), songs and dramatic readings are brought by Mátyás Dósa and Péter Harna.
– By lunchtime, Dinnyéshát welcomes travelers with Imre Vadkerti, singer from the legendary band Koromoran (Kormorán).
– At Kisköre’s Fish Ladder and Steps Bistro (Lépcső Bisztró), enjoy lunch with musical performances by Attila László and Szilvia Agárdi.
– Refreshed, cyclists continue to the Abádszalók Beach, treated to a concert by Linda Király—Glamour’s Singer of the Year nominee.
– The route leads riders through camps and tiny villages: at Tiszaderzs Camping, enjoy opera and folk songs by Zoltán Nyári and the local Water Lily Choir (Tavirózsa Kórus); Tiszaszőlős moves to the drumbeat of the Kurul Drummers (Kurul Dobosok); the journey wraps up back at Tiszaörvény’s marina, with Antal Gábor Szűcs and Péter Gál—composer and violinist, both key members of Kormorán. The group triumphantly returns to the Bicycle Center around 6:55 PM.
Sunday: Family, Boats, Crafts, and Culinary Delights
Sunday’s focus is family and water fun, hosted in the picturesque setting of Kisköre’s Fish Ladder and the renowned Steps Bistro (Lépcső Bisztró). Starting at 10 AM, a raft of activities unfolds: a kayaking and canoeing demonstration by the Hungarian Kayak-Canoe Federation (Magyar Kajak-Kenu Szövetség), a craft fair showcasing local artisans, a kids’ fishing program organized by MOHOSZ (Hungarian National Fishing Association), dog training demonstrations, and even horse-drawn rides from Yellow Foal Ranch (Sárgacsikó Tanyáról). Kids will love the bouncy castles, and everyone can indulge in the region’s unique flavors.
Music also returns, with theatrical and vocal performances by Mátyás Dósa and Nikolett Molnár, as well as Géza Egyházi and Andrea Mahó (both award-winning artists), plus a star-studded jazz and blues set featuring Norbert Nikodém, László Halper, Péter Román, and János Sramkó. The beloved Alma Ensemble (Alma Együttes) caps off the family festivities—a show for kids and the young-at-heart alike. As on Friday, the entire day is free.
Stay Amid Floating Villages and Hidden Havens
After immersing yourself in culture, rest in one of the region’s many unique or luxurious lodgings. Kormorán Marina offers rustic water bungalows, stilt houses, and treetop cabins—whether you want to sleep afloat, under the stars, or among the leaves, you’re covered. Dieter’s Camping is a family-run retreat across from Tiszafüred’s beach—modern, clean, and with loyal guests returning year after year.
Looking for more space? The lakeside, two-level apartments have terraces, high-speed internet, AC, minibars, bathtubs, and space for families of 4-6. Prefer eco-friendly luxury? The Lake Tisza Balneum Hotel (Tisza Balneum Hotel), a four-star wellness and conference center, sits nestled in protected parkland, offering amenities to balance body, mind, and spirit.
Families or groups will find comfort in the new guesthouses near the Szabics Marina and Boat Guest House (Ladik Vendégház), all with spacious, flexible accommodations just steps from the water and nature trails. Camping is also very popular around the lake, from the sizable Albatrosz Marina campground with its direct beach access and water-sports rentals, to the new Szabics Camping—a perfect budget base with campfires, hot showers, and dishwashing stations.
Feast by the Water: Culinary Highlights
Tiszafüred’s restaurants are a delight, ranging from the elegant regional and international dining at Plane Tree Restaurant (Platán Étterem), specializing in Tokaj wines and lakeside views, to the home-style Molnár Inn (Molnár Vendéglő Füzes) serving affordable, hearty local dishes. Looking for everything—beer, beds, and bites—in one place? NOPARA GyógySERtár Brewery-Guesthouse offers craft brews, à la carte breakfasts, and reliable WiFi. The lakeside villages provide endless choices, all blending traditional Hungarian hospitality with the tastes (and tranquility) of Lake Tisza (Tisza-tó).
