Every Tuesday at the Sóstó Open-Air Museum (Sóstói Múzeumfalu) in Nyíregyháza, you can try your hand at traditional weaving at the Beszterec Homestead (Besztereci Porta). Whatever you create, you’ll get to take your “masterpiece” home as a souvenir.
Discover Tradition and Practical Skills
Weaving used to be a typical women’s job in rural Hungary. Even after factory-made textiles became common, people still made vibrant rag blankets from worn clothes and fabric scraps. These colorful blankets covered benches and oven beds, doubled as sheets or stable covers, and decorated homes in practical ways. During the workshop, you’ll learn weaving basics by making a small rag rug from start to finish.
