When and where

From January through the end of April 2026, selected weekends transform the Hajnal Hotel (3400 Mezőkövesd, Hajnal u. 2.) into a celebration of tradition. A minimum of 40 guests is required for each event. February highlights: Feb 6–8, Feb 13–15, and Feb 20–22. Autumn dates also return: Oct 16–18, Oct 30–Nov 1; Nov 6–8, 13–15, 20–22, 27–29; Dec 4–6, 11–13, 18–20.

Friday: tune-up with tunes

Arrive Friday and jump straight into a live-music buffet dinner. It’s the ideal warm-up: generous platters, clinking glasses, and an instant community feel that sets the tone for the weekend. No frills—just plenty of food and a band that knows how to get toes tapping.

Saturday: the big day

The morning kicks off in proper pig-slaughter spirit. Between 7:00–9:00 at reception, each guest gets one pálinka and one mug of mulled wine. Then it’s breakfast time: a hearty buffet from 7:00–10:00 to fuel the day.
By noon, tradition leads the menu. The buffet lunch rolls out pork broth with fine vermicelli and vegetables, toros cabbage, roasts with potatoes, and fresh strudel. Rustic, comforting—exactly what the occasion calls for.
Evening brings the grand pig-slaughter feast (disznótor) with live music and a loaded buffet: soups; roasted meats and ribs; hurka and kolbász; mashed potatoes with onions; stuffed cabbage; and for dessert, honey cream slice (mézes krémes) and pudding. It’s loud, joyful, and unmistakably Hungarian.

Sunday: slow goodbye

Wrap the weekend with a generous buffet breakfast featuring cracklings and bacon. It’s the satisfying finale to a flavor-packed escape.

Wellness, because why not

Between courses, unwind in the Hajnal Hotel wellness area. The package blends country charm and classic fare with modern comfort—ideal for anyone craving tradition without giving up relaxation.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with kid discounts, buffet meals, and a chill wellness area that lets parents tag-team relaxation
+
The pig-slaughter theme is a classic Hungarian tradition, so it’s a unique cultural deep-dive you won’t find much in the U.S.
+
Mezőkövesd is near popular spots like Eger and the Bükk hills, so you can pair the weekend with easy side trips
+
No deposit and pay-on-site options (cards, SZÉP, etc.) make booking low-risk for travelers testing the waters
+
Prices are reasonable for a 2-night package with multiple buffets and wellness access, which is great versus U.S. resort weekends
+
Wellness add-ons for extra nights (massage chair, jade stone bed, etc.) sweeten a longer stay
+
Live music both Friday and Saturday creates an easy, social atmosphere without needing bar-hopping - The pig-slaughter concept and heavy pork menus may not suit vegetarians, picky eaters, or families with dietary restrictions
Cons
English may be limited; Hungarian helps for chats, activity details, and booking extras
Mezőkövesd isn’t internationally famous, and getting there usually means a train/bus combo from Budapest or a rental car
Similar food-focused folk weekends exist in Poland, Czechia, and Austria with broader international visibility and sometimes slicker logistics
