The end of summer means one thing in Nagykőrös (Nagykőrös): an epic send-off fair packed with centuries-old traditions and vibrant local flavor. This major event draws crowds who love unique experiences, offering market goods, handmade crafts, and a legendary animal market with roots going back to the 16th century.
Attendance at these fairs usually ranges between 8,000 and 10,000 people, but on Saints George and Michael’s (Szent György és Szent Mihály) feast days, the crowd can soar beyond 20,000, thanks to lively heritage programs. Expect folk dancers, puppeteers, Hungarian songs and operetta tunes, plus a wide range of classic fair performances.
When & Where
Mark your calendars: the summer farewell fair kicks off on August 31, 2025, at 2750 Alsójárás Lane 1 (Alsójárás dűlő 1). Get ready for a real slice of history—Nagykőrös (Nagykőrös) received its original market rights from royalty in the mid-1700s, later confirmed by Empress Maria Theresa. These privileges brought together herders, cowboys, shepherds, and merchants, all showcasing their livestock and crafts for the town’s loyal council and the crowd.
Today, you’ll find a sprawling fairground with 400 vendors offering a dizzying variety of goods, plus separate sections for animals: horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry, and small pets. Gates open early: market area at 4:30 AM, pig gate at 5:00 AM, cattle at 5:30 AM, and horse market at 6:00 AM. Festivities usually wind down by 1 or 2 PM—weather permitting. Depending on conditions, attendance ranges anywhere from 5,000 to 25,000.
