Veszprém’s castle district unveils its treasures in 2026 with guided walks that go far beyond the surface. Wander these spaces and you’ll absorb not just the buildings’ past but the spiritual thread that has woven through the city for a thousand years—the queens’ own town. Thematic tours reveal the district’s unique atmosphere and millennium-spanning story, visiting spots you can’t reach on your own. They start from the Biró–Giczey House at Castle Street (Vár utca) 31, 8200 Veszprém, with weekends featuring slots at 11:30, 14:00, and 16:00. Check the event calendar for exact times and any changes due to liturgies or other events.
Guided Castle Walks – Stories from the City’s Heart
These weekend tours unlock exclusive gems: the Archbishop’s Palace with its baroque interiors, renovated spaces, and standout artifacts; Gizella Chapel, the district’s oldest and quietest sacred spot with surviving fresco fragments that evoke a medieval atmosphere; St. Michael’s Cathedral and its crypt, illustrating Veszprém’s history through the basilica’s legacy and medieval crypt details; and St. George’s Chapel, an ancient memorial in the castle’s heart, open only on these tours. Groups are limited to 25 people and last about 60 minutes. Meet right in front of the Biró–Giczey House.
Free Exhibitions at Biró–Giczey House
Drop in anytime during opening hours—no charge for these displays. Bogáncs és liliom – Magdolnák virágai (Thistle and Lily – Magdalene’s Flowers) won 2025’s Exhibit of the Year, blending artifacts, engravings, and modern interpretations of Mary Magdalene, enriched with Blessed Mary Magdalene Bódi’s thoughts. The Kamrakiállítás (Chamber Exhibition) explores the cathedral’s past with baroque items, liturgical pieces, and over 100-year-old photos. Nem káptalan a fejem (Not a Chapter on My Head) is an interactive exhibit explaining who the canons were and how Veszprém’s chapter operated. The archaeological exhibit dazzles with the castle hill’s evolving settlement history through striking installations and finds.

New Thrills: Dive Underground and into Ancient Roots
The tours now include two exciting new stops. St. Michael’s Cathedral and crypt immerse you in a thousand-year saga: see the 14th-century Gothic sanctuary, Bishop Padányi Bíró Márton’s baroque tomb, and the restored interiors. The crypt’s vaulted silence captures time in stone—pure magic. St. George’s Chapel, north of the cathedral, ranks among Hungary’s oldest Christian sites. Excavations uncovered its 10th-century rotunda foundations. Legend has it that Prince Emeric made a vow here before the Virgin’s altar, making it sacred ground. Medieval pilgrims flocked to venerate St. George’s head relic, a gift from the Byzantine emperor to King Stephen.
Upcoming dates fill the calendar. March 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 (Sundays) feature tours at 11:30, 14:00, 16:00. From April 3–9, slots shift to 10:30, 14:00, 16:00 daily as listed. More dates coming—18 total so far. Organizers reserve the right to change times and programs!
