April 10: Poetry Power with Hobo and Gryllus
Kick off with Hungarian Poetry Day on Friday, April 10 at 7pm. Legendary rocker Hobo brings his show “Tudod, hogy nincs bocsánat” (You Know There’s No Forgiveness), channeling József Attila’s raw verses. “I read József Attila’s works like holy books, and sometimes it’s like seeing my own thoughts written down. The goal was to pull the audience in and make them think deeper,” says Hobo from a 1991 interview. He’s toured the country and beyond, delivering the poet’s words hundreds of times. Catch it at Imre Kálmán Cultural Center’s Teátrum Kávéház for $8 a ticket. It’s also part of the Spring Festival.
Earlier that day, kids get in on the action. At 10am, Gryllus Vilmos hosts a free kids’ concert for preschoolers and 1st-2nd graders – online registration required. Then at 2pm, his gala of versified songs for 3rd-4th graders and everyone else, again free with registration, same venue.
April 10-12: Bellydance Bonanza and Boat Rides
Dance fever hits with the Balaton Bellydance Festival, back as a charity event loaded with workshops and shows. Friday afternoon workshop, then evening hafla dinner and dance in the city center. Saturday packs four workshops from hot teachers in various styles, capped by a massive gala featuring top Hungarian dancers in an “Everything Disney” theme. Pure magic for dancers and fans.
Boat lovers, note the Siófoki sétahajózás (Siófok sightseeing cruises) running April 7-10, with more April 11-12, 13-17, 18-19, and 20-24. Chill on the lake waves!
April 12-19: Markets, Mysteries, and Magic
Saturday, April 12 brings Balatonni Gasztropiac at 8600 Siófok, Zamárdi út 37 – fresh eats and vibes. It repeats April 19 (listed twice, so double the fun?).
From April 6-12, grab friends or family for an exciting outdoor city scavenger hunt game. Explore Siófok’s sights while solving mysteries – the perfect unwind.
Magic reigns on April 18 with The Illusion Masters at Imre Kálmán Cultural Center’s theater: 3pm and 7pm shows. Fresh lineup with international stars from TV, festivals, and cruise ships – think Las Vegas, NYC, Beijing, Dubai, Paris, Monte Carlo. No camera tricks; illusions happen live, captivating the crowd. Stars: Zee Zeus (big-stage illusions), Kristály Márton (water orb wizard), Habók János (huge social following magician), and prize-winning sleight-of-hand whiz Bognár Krisztián. About two 50-minute acts with intermission, for ages 8+.
Mid-April Stars: Zorán, Butterflies, Theater Hits
Wednesday, April 15 at 7pm, Zorán’s unstoppable energy lights up the Spring Festival at the theater. Hungary’s music icon delivers sold-out hits plus rare treats – pure enchantment, $33 tickets.
Friday, April 17 at 4:30pm, Gyuris Rita (aka Plant-Protecting Rita online) demonstrates live and pinned butterflies and caterpillars at BRTK Library kids’ section. Interactive dive into their colorful world and life cycles – register, show library card (sign up if needed!).
April 20, black comedy “Libikóka” (Seesaw) by William Gibson via Art-Színtér: 6pm theater. Gittel (Kardffy Aisha) and Jerry (Kerényi Miklós Máté) wobble on love’s seesaw – can romance steady them? Directed by Csiby Gergely. Balcony seats $11, floor seats $13.
Tuesday, April 21 at 7pm, Varsányi Anna’s “Frida – Zenés románc” (Frida – Musical Romance) celebrates Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s love with humor, heart, and tunes. Snippet: “He’s still sleeping. Late April: Trees, Operetta, Kids’ Cinderella & Paris Laughs
Earth Day, April 22 at 1pm on Fő tér (Main Square): National Tree Planting Day comes here (cool weather bonus). Siófok council hands out free native saplings to locals (ID required, preference for homeowners). Boost green spaces, biodiversity, CO2 capture, and an eco-mindset.
