On October 4, 2025, Budapest (Budapest) will host a unique event exploring the world of animal-assisted therapy—a rapidly growing field where animals help people heal not only physically, but also mentally and socially. At its core, animal therapy involves being around or interacting with animals like dogs, horses, rabbits, turtles, or even hedgehogs to boost well-being, promote rehabilitation, support learning, and provide much-needed emotional support. The presence of animals can give a sense of safety and calm, increase motivation, and make communication easier, often breaking down barriers for patients who struggle to connect. This all takes place using trained animals, qualified professionals, and strict hygiene protocols.
Lecture Highlights and Structure
Program topics range from an introduction to the basics of animal-assisted interventions—types, uses, who can benefit, and which animals can be involved—to how healthcare systems regulate these methods. Speakers will also delve into the science behind therapy animals and how they affect us both physically and psychologically.
The schedule includes sessions on dog therapy for adults dealing with psychiatric or addiction issues, and the sometimes quirky question of what a dog is doing in the children’s ward. Other talks will highlight horse therapy, real working models from around Hungary (Magyarország), and the diverse world of hospital companion animals, from bunnies to turtles.
Registration, Credits, and Practical Info
The event welcomes anyone who registers in advance and pays the fee—about $61 in person or $75 online. Doctors, dentists, and clinical psychologists can earn 12 credits by passing a test, with recognized points for a wide range of specialties from pediatrics to addiction medicine and general medicine. Nurses and other healthcare professionals can earn 8 credits.
If you can’t attend in person, all lectures will be available by video between October 6-12 for online participants. Organizers note that they may change times or topics if necessary.
